The contemporary Chinese engagement in Africa dates back to the 1950's, and it has gained momentum in the last two decades. The Chinese presence in African countries has been getting more and more visible; not only the number of Chinese investments in the area and international agreements has been increasing, but also the size of the Chinese diaspora in the region has grown. China has been looking for new sources of natural resources and markets on which the 'made in China' goods would be welcomed, therefore it spares no efforts to establish and maintain possibly good relationships with Africa, especially with political elites of African countries. At first, the Chinese expansion was supported by the country's image of an older brother, a co-victim of the Western domination, and a example to be followed on the the path leading to development. This image, however, has started to be covered with some spots and shadows, caused by various Chinese activities. In this book we aimed to sketch the image of China and the Chinese in Zambia and Angola, presented by textual media and citizens of these countries, and to trace the most important factors influencing it. Moreover, we brought up some possible consequences of the prevalence of a particular - positive or negative - image for the future development of the Chinese expansion in the region. To obtain the possibly detailed image, we decided to combine quantitative and qualitative analysis of media content with results of our field work conducted in Africa.

This work is the study of a family's century long involvement with Irish self rule and political freedom. Joe Johnston (1890-1972), from a Tyrone Presbyterian small-farm background, had 3 elder brothers who made their careers in the Indian Civil Service. The family were 'Home Rule within the Empire' supporters in the Ulster liberal tradition. After studying classics and ancient history in Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and then in Oxford, JJ became a Fellow of Trinity in 1913. He then published his anti-Carson book Civil War in Ulster, attacking the process which culminated in the 1914 Larne gun-running. He contributed significantly to the emergent national movement. He wrote critically about 1930s economic policies, and went on the serve in the Irish Senate/Sennad from 1939 to 1954. His son RJ (b.1929) was a pioneer of the student left in TCD in the 1940s, and was associated with the post-war attempt to bring European Marxist thinking into the Irish labour movement, with the foundation of the Irish Workers League in 1948. After a period in London in the early 1960s, he returned to Dublin, this time as a research scientist, and helped Cathal Goulding in his attempt to get the 1960s generation of republicans to go political, in a democratic left-wing mode, decoupling from the Stalinist incubus. He helped set the stage for the emergence of the Civil Rights approach to reform in Northern politics, as a means of opening up an all-Ireland perspective. His opponents in the Republican movement, the Provisionals, opted for violence . In the ensuing decades he participated in various politicising processes which may, in the end, show the counter-productive nature of the role of the gun in politics, in Ireland and elsewhere. Roy Johnston lives in Dublin and continues to be politically active. "An important addition to any library of 20th century Irish Studies" Professor J.Skelly

What are the influences that govern how people view their worlds? What are the embedded values and practices that underpin the ways people think and act? Discourses We Live By approaches these questions through narrative research, in a process that uses words, images, activities or artefacts to ask people – either individually or collectively within social groupings – to examine, discuss, portray or otherwise make public their place in the world, their sense of belonging to (and identity within) the physical and cultural space they inhabit. This book is a rich and multifaceted collection of twenty-eight chapters that use varied lenses to examine the discourses that shape people’s lives. The contributors are themselves from many backgrounds – different academic disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, diverse professional practices and a range of countries and cultures. They represent a broad spectrum of age, status and outlook, and variously apply their research methods – but share a common interest in people, their lives, thoughts and actions. Gathering such eclectic experiences as those of student-teachers in Kenya, a released prisoner in Denmark, academics in Colombia, a group of migrants learning English, and gambling addiction support-workers in Italy, alongside more mainstream educational themes, the book presents a fascinating array of insights. Discourses We Live By will be essential reading for adult educators and practitioners, those involved with educational and professional practice, narrative researchers, and many sociologists. It will appeal to all who want to know how narratives shape the way we live and the way we talk about our lives.

With the sound of bursting metal, the International Space Station becomes a tumbling, powerless hulk and a tomb for its crew. As NASA prepares the Space Shuttle Endeavour in a desperate attempt to rescue the surviving astronauts, the question remains; was the cataclysm the result of a random collision with a piece of space junk, or a deliberate attempt to render it helpless? With the crime scene orbiting the planet some five hundred kilometers up, the truth may be found in a mathematical model and the terrorist who possesses it-a game of calculations that could cripple western civilization and topple America. As the countdown continues, Jake McSorley, former veteran and defense marketeer now living off the spoils of his family's aerospace company, becomes convinced that the million-pound Space Station has been the victim of sabotage. In six days the Station will cross paths with a dead rocket body, risking a collision that could create a massive cloud of speeding debris sweeping through space, grinding up the satellite systems the modern world has come to depend upon and eviscerating America's ability to defend itself. Science fiction or science fact-the reality lies in a Cold War test of a space warfare system hidden in a software game. Jake, whose father's company has been helping NASA put astronauts into space for more than forty years, is no scientist, but thanks to a run-in with an IED in Afghanistan he has a sixth sense when it comes to knowing when things aren't what they appear. And with the woman he loves about to ride Endeavour on its rescue mission to the Station, the countdown is ticking to discover the truth. But, learning what was done is far less dangerous than knowing who did it, and as Jake pursues the mystery the conspirators begin methodically and gruesomely cleaning up after themselves. Pursued by killers, he crosses the law and soon the FBI is after him, too, as he races to learn the secret of the Cascade--a secret that hides a contract with terrorists and a horrifying deception to start a war without rules, without restraints and without remorse. For Jake to stop them he must sacrifice everything that's left of his life, including the crew of Endeavour and the woman he has sacrificed everything for. The story is a fast-paced, hi-tech, action-adventure thriller with geopolitical intrigue in the spirit of Clancy, Cussler, Flynn, and Follett, taking the reader on a chase from space coast to space coast, with stops in the mountains of Pakistan and the border region with Afghanistan, and finally into orbit.

The Ethiopian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) was founded in 1960. It consisted at that time of congregations that had emerged as a fruit of the work of the Swedish missionary society Bibeltrogna Vänner (SMBV) conducted in central, eastern, and southern Ethiopia. When the EELC was founded, its members were few, estimated at around 500. Since then, the Church has grown to have nearly 30,000 members. SMBV was founded in 1911 and almost immediately began missionary work in Eritrea. However, the main goal was to reach the Oromo people of Ethiopia. In 1921, SMBV missionaries began work in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. From there, the work extended to the cities of Harar and Dire-Dawa in the east and to Arsi province in the south. SMBV's work, which had expanded rapidly, was greatly influenced by the attack of fascist Italy on Ethiopia in the autumn of 1935. Due to the subsequent Italian occupation, all SMBV's missionaries had to leave the country in 1936. To some extent, however, the work was able to continue during the occupation, despite the suffering and restrictions of the Ethiopian employees and parishioners. The book, which is the second part in a series describing the history of the EELC, deals with the period 1935 to1941 when Ethiopia was attacked and occupied by fascist Italy. The book has general and specific sections. The general ones briefly describe Italy's war of aggression and the subsequent occupation of the country. The specific parts descibe what happened to SMBV ́s missionaries and their Ethiopian associates during the war (until September 1936) and what Ethiopian Christians associated with SMBV experienced during the occupation. The specific sections also include an account of visits to Ethiopia October 1938 - January 1939 by representatives from SMBV in Sweden, and an account of missionary work among Ethiopian refugees in Kenya 1939 - 1942.
