Cette nouvelle édition sera accompagnée d'une préface de l'ancien ministre, qui livre ses réflexions sur ce que la pratique de l'alpinisme lui a apporté dans sa carrière politique... et dans sa vie. En effet, l'ascension de l'Everest a marqué un tournant pour Pierre Mazeaud : c'est sa dernière grande réalisation d'alpiniste et, dans les années qui suivent, sa carrière politique le conduit toujours plus haut vers les sommets de l'Etat. Il sera bientôt député, vice-président de l'Assemblée nationale et président du Conseil constitutionnel. L'" Insoumis " (titre de sa biographie parue chez Guérin) est un inclassable, comme ses deux compagnons d'alors : Jean Afanassieff, adepte tout feu tout flamme de l'escalade solitaire ; et Nicolas Jaeger, médecin et guide, disparu deux ans plus tard dans une tentative solitaire au Lhotse. Everest 78 est le récit de l'une des dernières ascensions " à l'ancienne " d'un Everest pas encore banalisé. Mais l'arrivée à 8848 mètres est l'occasion du premier direct radio depuis le plus haut sommet de la planète.
