"Rarely does a book suddenly thrust open a door, giving us a striking new view of a certain aspect of the field of anthropology. Cultures of Multiple Fathers does just that. . . . Pretty soon we can expect other volumes to appear documenting partible paternity in Africa, Australia, Melanesia, etc. But this volume will have been the first one."--Robert L. Carneiro, curator of South American Ethnology, American Museum of Natural History This book is the first to explore the concept of partible paternity, the aboriginal South American belief that a child can have more than one biological father--in other words, that all men who have sex with a woman during her pregnancy contribute to the formation of her baby and may assume social responsibilities for the child after its birth. The contributors, all Amazonian ethnologists with varied anthropological backgrounds and arguably the world's experts on this little-known phenomenon, explore how partible paternity works in several aboriginal societies in the South American lowlands. Many findings in this book challenge long-held dogma in such fields as evolutionary psychology and evolutionary anthropology and sociology. For example, under some circumstances, children with multiple putative fathers have higher prospects for surviving than do children ascribed to only a single father. Among several ethnic groups, a strong case can be made for a pregnant woman's having a lover so that her child will have more than one father and provider. The study goes well beyond presenting the fact of belief in partible paternity, placing it in an extensive matrix of kinship, marriage, and associated features of social life. Each author discusses a particular society's beliefs about such related issues as conception and fetal development, domestic group composition and kin terminology, determining which males supply and distribute fish and game to the group, and the fate of children whose fathers die or depart. Stephen Beckerman is associate professor of anthropology at Pennsylvania State University. Paul Valentine is senior lecturer in anthropology at the University of East London, U.K.

Jenny Lives With Eric And Martin written by Susanne Bösche and has been published by Lindhardt og Ringhof this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-26 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

It can never be wrong to live with someone you are fond of. 5-year-old Jenny lives happily with her dad Martin and his partner Eric. From celebrating birthdays and eating breakfast in bed to playing board games and reading bedtime stories, their weekends are spent the same way as everyone else's. Well-received in Denmark, ́Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin ́ sparked a major debate when it was published in Britain two years later, resulting in a ban that prohibited teaching school children about homosexuality. Therefore, it is the ideal book for early readers as it serves as great educational material for those interested in learning about family structures that differ from their own. A beautiful story celebrating diversity and difference, ́Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin ́ is a perfect starting point for conversations about various family structures. Susanne Bösche (b. 1953), a self-taught writer, has been writing ever since she discovered that letters make words and words make stories. Her writing often aims to celebrate differences and the idea that you shouldn't be afraid of the unknown. This is present in her first books, ́Nede i Anitas kælder ́ ( ́Anita's Basement ́) and ́Er vi venner eller hvad ́ ( ́Are We Friends or Not ́), which centre around the themes of youth, sexuality, and friendships. In 1981 she published the picture book ́Mette bor hos Morten og Erik ́ (Mette Lives with Eric and Martin ́) which caused great controversy in Britain after its release.

Do Fathers Matter written by Paul Raeburn and has been published by Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-03 with Family & Relationships categories.

For too long, we've thought of fathers as little more than sources of authority and economic stability in the lives of their children. Yet cutting-edge studies drawing unexpected links between fathers and children are forcing us to reconsider our assumptions and ask new questions: What changes occur in men when they are "expecting"? Do fathers affect their children's language development? What are the risks and rewards of being an older-than-average father at the time the child is born? What happens to a father's hormone levels at every stage of his child's development, and can a child influence the father's health? Just how much do fathers matter? In Do Fathers Matter? the award-winning journalist and father of five Paul Raeburn overturns the many myths and stereotypes of fatherhood as he examines the latest scientific findings on the parent we've often overlooked. Drawing on research from neuroscientists, animal behaviorists, geneticists, and developmental psychologists, among others, Raeburn takes us through the various stages of fatherhood, revealing the profound physiological connections between children and fathers, from conception through adolescence and into adulthood—and the importance of the relationship between mothers and fathers. In the process, he challenges the legacy of Freud and mainstream views of parental attachment, and also explains how we can become better parents ourselves. Ultimately, Raeburn shows how the role of the father is distinctly different from that of the mother, and that embracing fathers' significance in the lives of young people is something we can all benefit from. An engrossing, eye-opening, and deeply personal book that makes a case for a new perspective on the importance of fathers in our lives no matter what our family structure, Do Fathers Matter? will change the way we view fatherhood today.

Let The Children Play written by Pasi Sahlberg and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-22 with Education categories.

According to a professional association of 67,000 pediatricians, “the lifelong success of children is based on their ability to be creative and to apply the lessons learned from playing.” But play-including physical activity, the arts, and even free play-is being eliminated in our society and schools and despite huge financial investment these education policies have not improved learning. In Let the Children Play, the authors, both fathers of school-age children, tell how switching countries — Pasi Sahlberg brought his Finnish family to the United States, while William Doyle brought his American family to Finland — shocked them into writing this book. With research breakthroughs and case histories from Finland, China, Singapore, Scotland, New York, Texas, and around the world, the authors reveal how intellectual and physical play is the ultimate engine of transforming education — the key to giving our children the well-being, happiness, and skills they need to thrive in the 21st century, including curiosity, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and empathy. Written for parents, educators, and policymakers, this book reveals a striking vision of an inspiring future of our children's education-and how to make it happen.

Abby never dreamed she would not be the one to finish raising her children. After all she was the one who had the encounter with Jesus Christ that changed her life forever. How did this happen, where did she go wrong? The reader will explore the aftermath from Abbys personal experiences as she walked through the floods that ravaged her home and how she survived to tell about it. Had this book been available in 1977, Abby would have bought it. It would have been a source to help open her eyes on the importance of identifying and healing her own past childhood hurts in order to become healthy emotionally and empowered to stay away from unhealthy abusive men. Abby would have learned how to proactively help her children, guiding them on the road to healthy, happy productive lives from the start. It is a delicate and awkward subject discussing an abusive marriage that entails child sexual abuse and the horrific after effects of such abuse. Could it be that God called Abby into His kingdom for such a time as this? Former co-host of the 700 Club Sheila Walsh, wrote a book titled Honestly, that book was a key factor in helping Abby to face and process her own past childhood trauma. All I can say is WOW this is as much a self-help book as it is a Memoir. Donna Vigil R.N.
