Gandhi's concept of absolute truth is examined, and his understanding of mind, heart and soul and their orientation to truth. Gandhi's concept of truth has an equivalence with 'being' and with 'God'. Even without its God equivalence Gandhi attributed many active and transcendent qualities to truth. The terms 'truth' and 'God' are not always convertible in his writings, despite his assertion that they were convertible terms. Gandhi had a relational, faith-derived and action-oriented attitude towards God. Truth is inherently embodied in each human person. Seen differently by them it becomes relative truth although deriving from the one absolute truth. Each person is a 'truth-seeker', is 'manushya' - one who thinks, who knows. The concepts of mind and heart denote overlapping aspects of this thinking and knowing, always partly fused with feeling. The heart is the 'region' of the 'mind' whose function is believing and also a 'dharma-kshetra' - area of conflict. The obverse of believing is truth or falsity. What is believed in must be acted upon. The soul is the whole person of which the body is a fragment. It is the substance which mutually recognises other persons. The 'soul' transcends 'mind' and 'heart' because it includes deciding and acting. 'Performative' verb analysis of common human acts shows that all persons act in a 'self- committing', 'truth-oriented' way which goes beyond knowing and thinking, regardless of their conscious interest in truth or 'spiritual' matters.
