Excerpt from Everyday English Composition The object of this book is to improve the speech and the writing of the pupils, to develop their ability to think clearly, and to give them standards of appreciation and criticism. Constant stress laid on habits of thinking and on organization of material tends to make the pupils resourceful and self-reliant. The subject matter is limited to essentials - common matters of everyday speaking and writing. To a large extent the presentation is inductive, and an effort has been made both to vitalize and to humanize the work. Part One emphasizes good form and the manipulation of sentences and simple paragraphs. Part Two applies these tools of language to the most common forms of composition, stressing not only sentences and paragraphs but also matters of construction that apply particularly to the form of composition under consideration. The following are the important features of the book: 1. The assignments are varied in character, including talks, letters, themes, exercises, criticisms, games, dramatizations, and long themes. They are largely selected from the pupils' world and from vocational and community interests, and are adapted to the ability of the pupils. 2. The illustrative matter includes selections from both old and modem classics, and from magazines and newspapers as well as from the work of pupils. These selections also are closely related to the interests of the pupils. 3. Oral composition receives as much attention as written composition. Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. Excerpt from Lessons in Composition: Prepared to Accompany a Modern English Grammar It should be remembered that training in English involves the ear. Reading aloud, by both pupils and teacher, should be much resorted to as a means of ascertaining the qualities of a piece of writing and of developing the language sense. Although the external forms of composition have been kept in the background, it is not intended that they shall be overlooked. When the first written composition is prepared the pupils should receive the necessary directions for writing and folding. They 'should be required to use white paper, about eight by ten inches in size; to write on one side only, with black ink; to write the title in the middle of the first line, underscore it, and leave a double space; to leave a common margin of one inch and a paragraph margin of two; to read their themes carefully before handing them in to see that there are no mistakes in spelling, capitals, or punctuation; and, finally, to number each page, fold the whole lengthwise, and, with the crease lying to the left, in dorse near the top with their name, the date, and the title. *rules of punctuation will be found at the close of the grammar and the forms of letters in Lessons in Language and Literature.
