Diese Entwicklung zeugt von großer Offenheit und dem Verschwinden rein dogmatischen und ideologischen Denkens in beiden Bereichen. Doch wo lässt sich ein solcher Dialog sinnvoll beginnen? Die Antwort darauf ist so einfach wie die Frage selbst: am Beginn, am Anfang des Ganzen, was wir Welt, Kosmos, All oder Schöpfung nennen, am Anfang des Seins selbst. Und genau hier sehen sich Theologie und moderne Naturwissenschaft wieder in die Augen. Die einen, weil sie trotz immenser Erkenntnisse und Fortschritte angesichts der Unendlichkeit des Universums und der Endlichkeit der menschlichen Natur ins Zweifeln geraten sind, auf alle anstehenden Fragen nach der Struktur des Kosmos und des Lebens eine aus empirischer Perspektive befriedigende Antwort finden zu können. Und die anderen, weil sie erkennen mussten, dass Sturheit und Dogmatismus den Blick für das Wirkliche verfälschen und dass sie sich dem Geist der Moderne nicht länger verschließen können, ohne den Anspruch auf geistige Heimat vieler Menschen zu verlieren. Nachdem der Mensch erkannt hat, dass der Planet auf dem er lebt nicht im Mittelpunkt des Universums steht, und dass die Sonne nur ein Stern unter Abermilliarden Sternen Kosmos ist, wurde dem anthropozentrischen Weltbild mit der Entwicklung der modernen Evolutionstheorie wohl ein endgültiger Gnadenstoß versetzt. Wie nun ein Dialog zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Theologie aussehen kann und welche Konsequenzen sich daraus ergeben, soll im dritten Teil der Arbeit am Beispiel von Evolutionstheorie und Schöpfungsglaube noch genau erörtert werden. Zuvor soll jedoch ausgeführt werden, was man sich eigentlich unter Evolution oder Schöpfung im Einzelnen vorzustellen hat. [...]

In 1992 W. J. T. Mitchell argued for a "pictorial turn" in the humanities, registering a renewed interest in and prevalence of pictures and images in what had been understood as an age of simulation, or an increasingly extensive and diverse visual culture. However, in what is often characterized as a society of the "spectacle" we still do not know exactly what pictures or images are, what their relation to language is, how they operate on observers and the world, how their history is to be understood, and what is to be done with or about them. In this seminal collection of essays, the first to be devoted to the "pictorial turn", theorists from across the humanities and social sciences, representing the disciplines of art history, philosophy, geography, media studies, visual studies and anthropology, are brought together with a paleontologist and practising artists to consider amongst other things the relation between pictures and images, the power of landscape, the nature of political images, the status of images in the natural sciences, the "life" of images, and the pictorial uncanny. With these topics in mind, picture theory and iconology exceed in scope the objects of visual culture conventionally understood. This book was published as a special issue of Culture, Theory and Critique.

How and why did Europe spawn dictatorships and violence in the first half of the twentieth century, and then, after 1945 in the west and after 1989 in the east, create successful civilian societies? In this book, Volker Berghahn explains the rise and fall of the men of violence whose wars and civil wars twice devastated large areas of the European continent and Russia--until, after World War II, Europe adopted a liberal capitalist model of society that had first emerged in the United States, and the beginnings of which the Europeans had experienced in the mid-1920s. Berghahn begins by looking at how the violence perpetrated in Europe's colonial empires boomeranged into Europe, contributing to the millions of casualties on the battlefields of World War I. Next he considers the civil wars of the 1920s and the renewed rise of militarism and violence in the wake of the Great Crash of 1929. The second wave of even more massive violence crested in total war from 1939 to 1945 that killed more civilians than soldiers, and this time included the industrialized murder of millions of innocent men, women, and children in the Holocaust. However, as Berghahn concludes, the alternative vision of organizing a modern industrial society on a civilian basis--in which people peacefully consume mass-produced goods rather than being 'consumed' by mass-produced weapons--had never disappeared. With the United States emerging as the hegemonic power of the West, it was this model that finally prevailed in Western Europe after 1945 and after the end of the Cold War in Eastern Europe as well.
