La straordinaria raccolta di testimonianze, costituita dall'evidenza archeologica ed epigrafica pompeiana, ne e, per la societa del I secolo d. C., indiscutibile conferma. Gli edifici, gli affreschi, i graffiti documentano infatti, senza possibilita di dubbio, la presenza importante e diffusa della prostituzione a Pompei. Proprio essa ha del resto restituito l'unico lupanare, concordemente identificato come tale dagli studiosi. Sparsi per la piccola citta sono peraltro non pochi ambienti che dovevano ospitare l'attivita sessuale di prostitute e prostituti. Parecchi dei loro nomi erano segnati sui muri e sono stati tramandati ai moderni talvolta insieme con i prezzi praticati, le caratteristiche fisiche e comportamentali, le specifiche attitudini. Ne emerge un mondo sordido, solo apparentemente colorito: una storia di sfruttamento e di miseria, inserita nella piu complessiva cornice della societa schiavistica. (...)

This volume, with origins in a panel at the 2018 Celtic Conference in Classics, presents creative new approaches to epigraphic material, in an attempt to 'shake up' how we deal with inscriptions. Broad themes include the embodied experience of epigraphy, the unique capacities of epigraphic language as a genre, the visuality of inscriptions and the interplay of inscriptions with literary texts. Although each chapter focuses on specific objects and epigraphic landscapes, ranging from Republican Rome to early modern Scotland, the emphasis here is on using these case studies not as an end in themselves, but as a means of exploring broader methodological and theoretical issues to do with how we use inscriptions as evidence, both for the Greco-Roman world and for other time periods. Drawing on conversations from fields such as archaeology and anthropology, philology, art history, linguistics and history, contributors also seek to push the boundaries of epigraphy as a discipline and to demonstrate the analytical fruits of interdisciplinary approaches to inscribed material. Methodologies such as phenomenology, translingualism, intertextuality and critical fabulation are deployed to offer new perspectives on the social functions of inscriptions as texts and objects and to open up new horizons for the use of inscriptions as evidence for past societies.

The twenty-second Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference (TRAC) was held at the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main in spring 2012. During the three-day conference fifty papers were delivered, discussing issues from a wide range of geographical regions of the Roman Empire, and applying various theoretical and methodological approaches. An equally wide selection of subjects was presented: sessions looked at Greek art and philhellenism in the Roman world, the validity of the concept of ‘Romanisation’, change and continuity in Roman religion, urban neighbourhood relations in Pompeii and Ostia, the transformation of objects in and from the Roman world, frontier markets and Roman archaeology in the Provinces. In addition, two general sessions covered single topics such as the ‘transvestite of Catterick’, metal recycling or Egyptian funeral practice in the Roman period. This volume contains a selection of papers from all these sessions.
