The last decade has seen an upsurge in ex-offender reentry in the United States. Policymakers across the country have proposed that faith-based organizations can play an important role in assisting ex-offenders as they transition out of prison. However, the research on faith-based ex-offender programs is limited, and what exists provides inconclusive findings. This thesis is a case study of one faith-based reentry program that operates in Delaware. The findings suggest that the strength of the program was due to four components: strong interpersonal relationships within the organization; a strong organizational structure; comprehensive service delivery; and that the program offered participants a new location, and a new life away from old neighborhoods and patterns of behavior. Those interviewed suggested that faith was important to this organization because: it inspires the staff; provides an opportunity for the participants to engage in deep examination of their lives; and brings people to the organization--who in turn provide resources and support to the organization. The author also found several challenges that the organization faced in their service delivery, and argues that while such programs are important, more systematic, state-level solutions are needed to effectively combat the problems of ex-offender reentry within Delaware.

The United States has less than 5% of the world's population, but an estimated 25% of the world's incarcerated population; many of whom have a history of substance, physical or sexual abuse. Millions of individuals and families are negatively affected by incarceration. Correctional facilities lack rehabilitative services and the inevitable separation of imprisonment itself causes families to suffer. Upon release, former prisoners face a multitude of barriers that reduce successful reentry into society. Many former prisoners are restricted in the areas of employment, housing and public assistance due to felony convictions. These legal barriers must be eliminated so former prisoners will have a chance at a successful and healthy life. The purpose of this grant is to initiate an advocacy training program, Eliminating Invisible Bars, for former female prisoners participating with A New Way of Life Reentry Project. The grant writer selected the Liberty Hill Foundation to fund this program. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not required for the successful completion of the project.

The final book in the groundbreaking Voices from the Underground series, Stop the Presses! I Want to Get Off!, is the inspiring, frenetic, funny, sad, always-cash-starved story of Joe Grant, founder and publisher of Prisoners’ Digest International, the most important prisoners’ rights underground newspaper of the Vietnam era. From Grant’s military days in pre-Revolutionary Cuba during the Korean War, to his time as publisher of a pro-union newspaper in Cedar Rapids and his eventual imprisonment in Leavenworth, Kansas, Grant’s personal history is a testament to the power of courage under duress. One of the more notorious federal penitentiaries in the nation, Leavenworth inspired Grant to found PDI in an effort to bring hope to prisoners and their families nationwide.

After The Peace written by Carolyn Gallaher and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-02 with Social Science categories.

The 1998 Belfast Agreement promised to release citizens of Northern Ireland from the grip of paramilitarism. However, almost a decade later, Loyalist paramilitaries were still on the battlefield. After the Peace examines the delayed business of Loyalist demilitarization and explains why it included more fits than starts in the decade since formal peace and how Loyalist paramilitary recalcitrance has affected everyday Loyalists. Drawing on interviews with current and former Loyalist paramilitary men, community workers, and government officials, Carolyn Gallaher charts the trenchant divisions that emerged during the run-up to peace and thwart demilitarization today. After the Peace demonstrates that some Loyalist paramilitary men want to rebuild their communities and join the political process. They pledge a break with violence and the criminality that sustained their struggle. Others vow not to surrender and refuse to set aside their guns. These units operate under a Loyalist banner but increasingly resemble criminal fiefdoms. In the wake of this internecine power struggle, demilitarization has all but stalled. Gallaher documents the battle for the heart of Loyalism in varied settings, from the attempt to define Ulster Scots as a language to deadly feuds between UVF, UDA, and LVF contingents. After the Peace brings the story of Loyalist paramilitaries up to date and sheds light on the residual violence that persists in the post-accord era.
