In this book we consider a Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations with a small parameter. The book is divided into th ree parts according to three ways of involving the small parameter in the system. In Part 1 we study the quasiregular Cauchy problem. Th at is, a problem with the singularity included in a bounded function j , which depends on time and a small parameter. This problem is a generalization of the regu larly perturbed Cauchy problem studied by Poincare [35]. Some differential equations which are solved by the averaging method can be reduced to a quasiregular Cauchy problem. As an example, in Chapter 2 we consider the van der Pol problem. In Part 2 we study the Tikhonov problem. This is, a Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations where the coefficients by the derivatives are integer degrees of a small parameter.

This volume is concerned with a detailed description of the canonical operator method - one of the asymptotic methods of linear mathematical physics. The book is, in fact, an extension and continuation of the authors' works [59], [60], [65]. The basic ideas are summarized in the Introduction. The book consists of two parts. In the first, the theory of the canonical operator is develop ed, whereas, in the second, many applications of the canonical operator method to concrete problems of mathematical physics are presented. The authors are pleased to express their deep gratitude to S. M. Tsidilin for his valuable comments. THE AUTHORS IX INTRODUCTION 1. Various problems of mathematical and theoretical physics involve partial differential equations with a small parameter at the highest derivative terms. For constructing approximate solutions of these equations, asymptotic methods have long been used. In recent decades there has been a renaissance period of the asymptotic methods of linear mathematical physics. The range of their applicability has expanded: the asymptotic methods have been not only continuously used in traditional branches of mathematical physics but also have had an essential impact on the development of the general theory of partial differential equations. It appeared recently that there is a unified approach to a number of problems which, at first sight, looked rather unrelated.

What is the true mark of inspiration? Ideally it may mean the originality, freshness and enthusiasm of a new breakthrough in mathematical thought. The reader will feel this inspiration in all four seminal papers by Duistermaat, Guillemin and Hörmander presented here for the first time ever in one volume. However, as time goes by, the price researchers have to pay is to sacrifice simplicity for the sake of a higher degree of abstraction. Thus the original idea will only be a foundation on which more and more abstract theories are being built. It is the unique feature of this book to combine the basic motivations and ideas of the early sources with knowledgeable and lucid expositions on the present state of Fourier Integral Operators, thus bridging the gap between the past and present. A handy and useful introduction that will serve novices in this field and working mathematicians equally well.

The Emphasis Year on Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Related Analysis at Northwestern University produced this fine collection of original research and survey articles. Many well-known mathematicians attended the events and submitted their contributions for this volume. Eighteen papers comprise this work, representing the most significant advances and current trends in nonlinear PDEs and their applications. Topics covered include elliptic and parabolic equations, NavierStokes equations, and hyperbolic conservation laws. Important applications are presented from incompressible and compressible fluid mechanics, combustion, and electromagnetism. Also included are articles on recent advances in statistical reliability in modeling, simulation, level set methods forimage processing, shock waves, free boundaries, boundary layers, errors in numerical solutions, stability, instability, and singular limits. The volume is suitable for researchers and graduate students interested in partial differential equations.
