The present study was designed to further examine the relationship between reminiscence, hypermnesia, and order retention. In Experiment 1, participants viewed a series of 25 high frequency nouns and then completed either three successive free recall tests (recalling to-be-recalled material in any order) or three successive serial recall tests (recalling to-be-recalled material in its exact presentation order). Experiment 2 also examined free and serial recall performance but used more ecologically-valid stimuli (20 actions that might occur in a park - throwing a Frisbee, reading a newspaper, etc.). The current findings are discussed in relation to general theories of hypermnesia and the implications for eyewitness testimony.

In our daily lives, we constantly have to remember sequences such as telephone numbers, license plates or pin codes. How do we hold and recall information that is presented in a sequential manner? Recent interest in the field of serial recall has highlighted that long-term memory seems to interact with our ability to accurately recall sequences. In this thesis, I examine this interaction using overlearnt sequences of digits and letters, and by testing an unusual group with extremely consistent long-term links between digits and colours : synaesthetes. Fror grapheme-colour synaesthetes, letters and digits elicit vivid perceptions of colours. As grapheme-colour pairings are different between synaesthetes but highly consistent for each individual, synaesthesia offers a unique opportunity to examine the effect of long-term associations on immediate serial recall. A recent study suggests that serial colour memory in synaesthetes is not generally enhanced but that synaesthetic associations can, under certain circumstances, be used strategically to improve colour memory. By further exploring this link, we may gain a more detailed insight into the time course of backward translation between colours and digits in synaesthetes and are at the same time able to examine the effect of long-term knowledge on Immediate Serial Recall (ISR) of colours.

The criminal justice process is unavoidably human. Police detectives, witnesses, suspects, and victims shape the course of investigations, while prosecutors, defense attorneys, jurors, and judges affect the outcome of adjudication. In this sweeping review of psychological research, Dan Simon shows how flawed investigations can produce erroneous evidence and why well-meaning juries send innocent people to prison and set the guilty free. The investigator’s task is genuinely difficult and prone to bias. This often leads investigators to draw faulty conclusions, assess suspects’ truthfulness incorrectly, and conduct coercive interrogations that can lead to false confessions. Eyewitnesses’ identification of perpetrators and detailed recollections of criminal events rely on cognitive processes that are often mistaken and can easily be skewed by the investigative procedures used. In the courtroom, jurors and judges are ill-equipped to assess the accuracy of testimony, especially in the face of the heavy-handed rhetoric and strong emotions that crimes arouse. Simon offers an array of feasible ways to improve the accuracy of criminal investigations and trials. While the limitations of human cognition will always be an obstacle, these reforms can enhance the criminal justice system’s ability to decide correctly whom to release and whom to punish.
