This report describes the results of three seasons of archaeological excavation that took place between 2002 and 2004 on a complex of earthworks (Site M) north-east of Knowth passage tomb cemetery, County Meath. Excavation over twelve weeks revealed three main phases of activity: linear trenches and a cluster of irregularly shaped pits; a cemetery enclosed by two subcircular ditches of sixth- to tenth-century date and a later external earthwork constructed in the early medieval period. Evidence for agricultural and manufacturing activity within the enclosures was also identified. In addition, large quantities of unstratified prehistoric lithics were recovered. Knowth Site M is an early medieval cemetery with no ecclesiastical associations and can be compared to a number of important early secular cemeteries discovered in recent years in north-east Leinster. Only fields away from the world famous passage tomb at Knowth, the monument known as 'Site M' has been in use as a burial-ground from the time of St Patrick to the tenth century.

Clonmacnoise was among the busiest, most economically complex, and intensely sacred places in early medieval Ireland. In Animals and Sacred Bodies in Early Medieval Ireland: Religion and Urbanism at Clonmacnoise, John Soderberg argues that animals are the key to understanding Clonmacnoise’s development as a thriving settlement and a sacred space. At this sanctuary city on the River Shannon, animal bodies were an essential source of food and raw materials. They were also depicted extensively on religious objects. Drawing from new theories about the intersections between religion and economics, John Soderberg explores how transformations emerging from animal encounters made Clonmacnoise a sacred settlement and created the sacred bodies of early medieval Ireland.

Since the days of V. Gordon Childe, the study of the emergence of complex societies has been a central question in anthropological archaeology. However, archaeologists working in the Americanist tradition have drawn most of their models for the emergence of social complexity from research in the Middle East and Latin America. Bernard Wailes was a strong advocate for the importance of later prehistoric and early medieval Europe as an alternative model of sociopolitical evolution and trained generations of American archaeologists now active in European research from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Two centuries of excavation and research in Europe have produced one of the richest bodies of archaeological data anywhere in the world. The abundant data show that technological innovations such as metallurgy appeared very early, but urbanism and state formation are comparatively late developments. Key transformative process such as the spread of agriculture did not happen uniformly but rather at different rates in different regions. The essays in this volume celebrate the legacy of Bernard Wailes by highlighting the contribution of the European archaeological record to our understanding of the emergence of social complexity. They provide case studies in how ancient Europe can inform anthropological archaeology. Not only do they illuminate key research topics, they also invite archaeologists working in other parts of the world to consider comparisons to ancient Europe as they construct models for cultural development for their regions. Although there is a substantial corpus of literature on European prehistoric and medieval archaeology, we do not know of a comparable volume that explicitly focuses on the contribution that the study of ancient Europe can make to anthropological archaeology.

"Trim is one of Ireland's best-known medieval towns, and yet for a very long time many aspects of its early history and development were poorly understood. A series of important archaeological excavations have taken place in recent years and this publication brings together the results of these investigations for the first time. The book opens with a foreword by John Bradley, one of Ireland's foremost experts on medieval towns, followed by an introductory overview by Michael Potterton, author of Medieval Trim: history and archaeology. A fascinating glimpse into prehistory is provided by Fiona Beglane's study of an enigmatic Iron-Age pit full of pigs' feet. Of special significance is new evidence that proves beyond reasonable doubt that Trim's first church was located where the Church of Ireland cathedral now stands. New light is shed upon death and burial in and around the town, as well as the layout and development of the religious houses. The location and form of the town's medieval defences, as well as its streets, houses and suburbs are also illuminated. New evidence is discussed for small-scale craft and industry as well as diet, health and daily life. An overview is provided of the range and origins of the various types of medieval pottery found in the town. The book ends with a summary of the recently commissioned management and conservation plans for Trim's town walls."--Publisher's description.

Initial remote sensing survey at Tlachtga, Co. Meath in 2011–12 highlighted the presence of multiple, partially overlapping phases of enclosure at the site. Three subsequent seasons of excavation provided critical interpretive evidence, with over 15,000 fragments of animal bone, human remains, charred plant material, evidence of metalworking, and a hoard of Anglo-Saxon silver coins dating to the late 10th century AD. The main activity at the site spans four broad periods and two main phases of monumental construction: a late Bronze Age to early Iron Age ‘Hillfort Phase’ (1100–400 BC) and a late Iron Age to early medieval (AD 400–600) ringfort phase associated with a smaller foundation enclosure – the ‘Southern Enclosure’. This ringfort phase was remodeled later in the early medieval period (9th–10th century AD) and augmented by a phase of mound construction in the mid-10th century AD. This is contemporary with the deposition of the coin hoard east of the main complex in an apparent craft-working area. The final phase of the central mound indicates the construction of a timber stockade, most likely in the 12th century, again with significant craft activity. This volume represents the excavation of at least four loci within the broader monumental landscape of Tlachtga, charting its progression from Bronze Age hillfort to pre-Anglo Norman power display mound. The excavations at the Hill of Ward and this publication were made possible through funding by the National Monuments Service via the Royal Irish Academy archaeological research excavation grants, and by Meath County Council, with additional support by the Office of Public Works and the Heritage Council.

While the evidence from the sites concentrates heavily on the early medieval period, there are also substantial traces of prehistoric and later medieval activity. This monograph contains the proceedings of the NRA National Archaeology Seminar held in the City Wall Space, Wood Quay Venue, Dublin Civic Offices, on 25 August 2011. Encounters between Peoples contains seven papers by a number of archaeologists and a historian who were invited to address the multifaceted nature of our archaeological heritage and the varied peoples that contributed to its creation. In these proceedings we encounter early prehistoric farming communities in County Wexford, Iron Age assembly and ritual in County Meath and the diverse peoples who inhabited a County Tipperary townland over six millennia. Encounters between Peoples also presents material evidence for interactions between communities of differing religion and ethnicity during the historic period.

The complex of passage tombs at Knowth is dated c. 3200-2900 BC, and this volume deals with one of the most significant aspects of the site. It presents a complete catalogue of the 390 recorded carved stones at Knowth, through descriptions, drawings and photographs. Six main styles of art have been identified and these are discussed, together with the motifs and techniques employed. The Knowth carvings constitute c. 46% of all such art in Ireland, and the volume sets the Knowth art in the context of the other Irish carvings, those in western and northern Britain, and also the somewhat earlier art found on megalithic tombs in Atlantic Europe.
