This volume deals with all the major excavations at Carisbrooke during the 20th century, particularly those by Stuart Rigold and Chris Young. Many of these excavations were undertaken during the repair and refurbishment of the castle and the provision of services, and provide below-ground evidence which is related to the known history of building and castle defences. Evidence was recovered for a pre-existing Saxon enclosure and three very rich saxon graves, a complex sequence of gatehouse and drawbridge structures, and various additions and alterations to the castle defences from the 12th-17th centuries. Large and important assemblages of medieval and post-medieval pottery and ironwork were recovered. Documentary evidence for the 1597-1601 refurbishment and the historical background to them is also reviewed.

The potential burial site of the mysterious Dark Age king Cerdic who founded Wessex which grew into England is revealed in a new book. Fascinating research based on an ancient land charter from the son of Alfred the Great leads to a former Bronze Age mound on the edge of a Hampshire town. This huge barrow was located near a historic trackway, a Wansdyke-style earthwork and an old Roman Road as a very public statement of power and warning to enemies. Author Paul Harper said: “The exciting discovery has brought the story of Cerdic from a lost period of British history to life. This could be overwhelming proof that Cerdic was not just a product of fantasy in the chaotic aftermath of post-Roman Britain but a real warlord who forged a powerful realm which evolved into the nation of England.” The book reveals how Cerdic emerged from the ashes of Rome in the 6th century, with a warband known as the Gewisse which offered protection to civilians from barbarians roaming the land and then fought for territory with rival kingdoms before evolving into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. During an unprecedented climate disaster, which blocked out normal sunlight and led to a plague pandemic which killed millions, Cerdic carved out a new domain that shapes Britain up to the present day. One-by-one mysteries are solved including the identity of his shadowy son, the location of every bloody battle against enemy warlords, the links to an iconic medieval poem and the King Arthur legend.

The subject of ‘Molluscs in Archaeology’ has not been dealt with collectively for several decades. This new volume in Oxbow’s Studying Scientific Archaeology series addresses many aspects of mollusks in archaeology. It will give the reader an overview of the whole topic; methods of analysis and approaches to interpretation. It aims to be a broad based text book giving readers an insight of how to apply analysis to different present and past landscapes and how to interpret those landscapes. It includes Marine, Freshwater and land snails studies, and examines topics such as diet, economy, climate, environmental and land-use, isotopes and mollusks as artifacts. It aims to provide archaeologists and students with the first port of call giving them a) methods and principles, and b) the potential information mollusks can provide. It concentrates on analysis and interpretation most archaeologists and students can undertake and understand, and to 'review' the 'heavier' science in terms of potential, application and interpretational value.

This is a comprehensive guide to the buildings of the Isle of Wight. The beguiling architecture of the many towns, villages and resorts is explored in full, as are the charming villas and cottages ornes dotted around the spectacular coasts. But the Island also boasts architecture on the grandest scale: the powerful fortress of Carisbrooke Castle, with its evocative Saxon foundations; the rich and enigmatic baroque mansion of Appuldurcombe; Osborne House, the domestic paradise of Victoria and Albert, with its formal gardens; and the extraordinary "Quarr Abbey", a masterpiece of Expressionist brick by the French monk and architect, Dom Paul Bellot. Other attractions include Roman villas, sturdy manor houses, powerful coastal defences built for Henry VIII (and reinforced under Queen Victoria), and the retreats of Tennyson and other Victorian notables, not to mention a well-established tradition of innovative modern design. Each town or village is treated in a detailed gazetteer. A general introduction provides a historical and artistic overview. Numerous text illustrations, maps and plans, nearly a hundred new colour photographs, full indexes and an illustrated glossary help to make this book invaluable as both reference work and guide
