Excerpt from Excursions and Lessons in Home Geography It is customary in some schools to make excursions with children to study the geography of the home neighborhood. The series of excursions described in this book furnishes a variety of illustrations in different localities of such trips with children. They are such excursions as are usually taken with classes in the third or the fourth grade. But while it may be well to emphasize the geographical excursion in these grades just beginning the study, an occasional excursion would not be out of place with children in any grade below the high school. In fact, some of the trips described were taken with grammar school classes. A few of these topics, like that of gravel roads, may be discussed without an excursion, but in most of them the excursion would be a real help. In this book our purpose has been to give the subject-matter rather than the method of managing the excursion, though occasionally hints are given on method. Excerpt from Geography Through the Stereoscope: Teacher's Manual The means that have so far been brought within the reach of pupils in the study of geography have certainly been imperfect. Home geogra phy, it is true, can be studied at first hand through knowledge gained by means of school excursions, and in the Ordinary course of the pupil's life. But, in the study of the great world beyond the home surroundings, pupils have been de pendent upon word-descriptions, upon maps, and to an increasing extent in recent years, upon pictures. Excerpt from Suggestions on Teaching Geography The attention of teachers and of those fitting themselves to be teachers is called especially to the introductory chapters. They may not approve of all that is said; but as honest students they will seek after the truth for its own sake, and these chapters may guide them in the way that leads to it. The chapters under Imaginary Excursions are in tended as models to be followed by the pupils. It is hoped they may take as much pleasure in studying them as the writer did in their preparation. If they do, it is certain that those lessons will not prove burdensome in the least. It is with the hope that it may help teachers and pupils to see the profit and pleasure there are in the study of Geography that this volume has been prepared by Their friend. Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography Having been long convinced that such a method of instruction would place this branch of science upon a firmer and broader footing in our educational system, and would moreover prove of great service in foster ing a spirit of observation and reflection even among children, I projected many years ago the Primer of Pnysieal Geograp/zy, published in the series of Science Primers. The continued sale of large impressions of that little work encourages the hope that the method advocated has been found successful in practice.
