Examples, crucial links between discourse and society's view of reality, have until now been largely neglected in literary criticism. In the first book-length study of the rhetoric of example, John Lyons situates this figure by comparing it with more frequently studied tropes such as metaphor and synecdoche, discusses meanings of the terms example and exemplum, and proposes a set of descriptive concepts for the study of example in early modern literature. Tracing its paradoxical nature back to Aristotle's Rhetoric, Lyons shows how exemplary rhetoric is caught between often competing aims of persuasive general statement and accurate representation. In French and Italian texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries this dual task was rendered still more challenging by a transition to new sources of examples as the age of discovery brought increased emphasis on observation. The writers of this period were aware of a crisis in exemplary rhetoric, a situation in which serious questions were raised about how authors and audience would find a common ground in interpreting representative instances. Lyons's focus on the strategy of example leads to new readings of six major writers--Machiavelli, Marguerite de Navarre, Montaigne, Pascal, Descartes, and Marie de Lafayette. In the Preface to his history of Rome Livy stated that the most valuable feature of history is that it provides "omnis ... exempli documenta" for readers to follow and avoid* I do not believe that Livy meant no more than that his readers could extract "exempla" at random from his history} rather I take these words to refer to the actual occurrences of "exemplum" and "documentum" within his work. Several passages show that Livy intended these words to be taken closely together. They often appear in key positions within individual speeches, episodes and books and in passages which echo the moral tone of the Preface. Almost every occurrence of these words can be grouped with others under one of 26 subject-headings. While a few occurrences were suggested to Livy by his immediate sources, it seems likely that the majority were derived from lists of "exempla" drawn up before he began to write his history. Possibly he had made use of the collection of "Exempla" recently produced by Cornelius Nepos. By using as a basis these headings and the many later works for which Livy was a major source, I have suggested several contexts and passages from the lost books in which Livy is likely to have inserted "exemplum" or "documentum". -- Several other ancient historians used such words in a similar fashion but, unlike Livy, concentrated on only a few topics each. Whereas almost every occurrence of these words in Livy can be grouped with others under a specific heading, this is possible with only a minority of the occurrences in any other history. It seems, therefore, that "exemplum" and "dooumentum" meant far more to Livy than such words meant to the other ancient historians and that their appearance in his Preface involved more than the repetition of a commonplace.
