O livro “Exercício Intermitente: Estado da arte e aplicações práticas”, fruto do trabalho desenvolvido no interior da disciplina “Pesquisa em Exercício Físico Intermitente” do programa de pós-graduação em Educação Física da Escola Superior de Educação Física da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (ESEF/UFPel), visa ocupar lacuna na literatura técnica-científica nacional a respeito da temática. Aponto a literatura nacional como objeto, pois em âmbito internacional, pesquisas com exercícios desta natureza se proliferam de modo muito veloz. Assim, o corpo de conhecimento internacionalmente produzido e publicado é amplo. Porém, pouco tem sido divulgado em português, para que acadêmicos de diferentes níveis e pessoas interessadas na temática possam se envolver. Todos os capítulos contam com segmento inicial de contextualização teórica e temática, com tratamento das diferentes variáveis demográficas e, então, ganham características próprias. Encontram-se capítulos com amplas revisões, como o “Exercício Intermitente na Terceira Idade” e “Aplicações do Exercício Intermitente na Síndrome Metabólica”, bem como revisões sistemáticas da literatura, a exemplo de “Exercício intermitente e emagrecimento: revisão sistemática da literatura” e “Aplicações do Exercício Intermitente na Síndrome Metabólica”. Modalidades esportivas são trazidas nesta obra, a partir do futebol, com o capítulo intitulado “Revisão sistemática dos efeitos do futebol recreacional em adultos não atletas” e com o capítulo com dados primários obtidos com lutadores de taekwondo, denominado “Efeitos de três protocolos de treinamento específico de taekwondo em diferentes variáveis psicofisiológicas”.

The major causes of premature adult deaths in all regions of the world, due to chronic diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and cancer, have been generally neglected on the international health and development agenda. Four out of every five chronic disease-related deaths in the world occur in low and middle income countries, where people tend to develop these diseases at a younger age and to die sooner. The death toll is projected to rise by a further 17 per cent in the next 10 years, whilst child obesity rates are increasing worldwide. This report examines the actual scale and severity of the problem using the most recent data available, considers the major risk factors and associated trends, and discusses the public health policy actions required to implement effective integrated chronic disease prevention and control measures.

A total institution is defined by Goffman as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context. Each chapter approaches the central issue from a different vantage point, each introduction drawing upon a different source in sociology and having little direct relation to the other chapters. This method of presenting material may be irksome, but it allows the reader to pursue the main theme of each paper analytically and comparatively past the point that would be allowable in chapters of an integrated book. If sociological concepts are to be treated with affection, each must be traced back to where it best applies, followed from there wherever it seems to lead, and pressed to disclose the rest of its family.
