One of the great mysteries of music is how it affects us in multitude of ways. Whether talking about our individual tastes as listeners, or individual differences as performers, what are the psychological qualities that can turn some people into great musicians, but not others? Is it down to genes, sheer hard work, or some other quality in the individual? The Natural Musician is the story of how we become composers, performers, or just discriminating listeners. It searches for those psychological traits essential for turning one into a musician. Unlike many others, Kirnarskaya does believe in the existence of talent, but argues that it is due to multiplicative factors, which she describes, analyses, and shows how to test. She also sheds light on the essence and origins of perfect pitch, examines the triumphs and tortures of musical prodigies, and considers the implications of her theories for the teaching of music. After a foreword from the legendary conductor, Gennady Rodhestvensky, the book looks at our basic musical faculties - how we perceive sounds, distinguish their pitch and structure, and recognise rhythm. It then examines the nature of musical empathy - what it is that allows us to perceive and emotionally connect with music. The second part of the book focuses on the creative processes behind writing music. The third section deals with music education, looking at the role of innate and inherited characteristics in the formation of talent, and considering why many who excel at an early age, burn out later on. The book ends exploring how musical development can shape the human brain, strengthening other cognitive faculties, including those unrelated to music. This is a book that will fascinate anyone with an interest in music and musicians, from the fields of music psychology and education, to musicians themselves, whether amateur and professional.

The Hatred Of Music written by Pascal Quignard and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-28 with Music categories.

Throughout Pascal Quignard’s distinguished literary career, music has been a recurring obsession. As a musician he organized the International Festival of Baroque Opera and Theatre at Versailles in the early 1990s, and thus was instrumental in the rediscovery of much forgotten classical music. Yet in 1994 he abruptly renounced all musical activities. The Hatred of Music is Quignard’s masterful exploration of the power of music and what history reveals about the dangers it poses. From prehistoric chants to challenging contemporary compositions, Quignard reflects on music of all kinds and eras. He draws on vast cultural knowledge—the Bible, Greek mythology, early modern history, modern philosophy, the Holocaust, and more—to develop ten accessible treatises on music. In each of these small masterpieces the author exposes music’s potential to manipulate, to mesmerize, to domesticate. Especially disturbing is his scrutiny of the role music played in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Quignard’s provocative book takes on particular relevance today, as we find ourselves surrounded by music as never before in history.

Audience Development written by National Endowment for the Arts. Research Division and has been published by Arts Research Division this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Several specific objectives have had wide recognition in the arts community, namely: to broaden the audience for the performing arts, to determine the applicability of sophisticated tools of marketing to the problem of generating demand for the arts, to find the best predictors of arts attendance, and to develop strategies that will appeal to those who, by these predictors, are potential attenders. This research report summarizes a study conducted in 1977 by Alan R. Andreasen and Russell W. Belk. The investigators collected new audience data in a carefully controlled group of surveys in four southern cities (Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Columbia, and Memphis), and applied to these data a number of sophisticated measuring and marketing techniques to discover efficient and effective methods for inducing marginal attenders of the performing arts to become frequent patrons. Although no hitherto untried means to this end were uncovered, this publication makes advanced techniques more comprehensible and accessible to arts administrators. In addition, by analyzing characteristics that move or do not move people to attend performing arts events, and from that analysis deriving strategies capable of altering factors that lead to nonattendance, enough practical conclusions were reached to recommend an extended program of experimentation in the four cities studied. In the 1960s and 1970s, becoming a rock musician was fundamentally different than playing other kinds of music. It was a learned rather than a taught skill. In On Becoming a Rock Musician, sociologist H. Stith Bennett observes what makes someone a rock musician and what persuades others to take him seriously in this role. The book explores how bands form; the backstage and onstage reality of playing in a band; how bands promote themselves and interact with audiences and music professionals like DJs; and the role of performance.
