Exemplary, a look is taken at Joyce's short story collection Dubliners and Colm Toíbín's Brooklyn. From the onset of the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century, millions of individuals emigrated from Ireland in search of a better life. Emigration was largely regarded as a matter of forceful exile in which families were being torn apart and estranged, and Ireland was losing its most valuable assets in its citizens. It is, however, important to appreciate that the subject and experience of emigration is one of great complexities, and largely individual experience. Thus, implying that the experiences from mass waves of emigration were not all stories of trauma and distress, in fact there was evidence of success. This essay therefore seeks to explore different types of exile, in addition to different perspectives and experiences of exile within the oeuvre of Joyce and Toíbín, two authors who both underwent exile from Ireland themselves.

The essays in this collection combine historical, cultural, and literary analyses in their treatment of aspects of exile in Irish writing. Some are 'structuralist' in seeing exile as a physical state of being, often associated with absence, into which an individual willingly or unwillingly enters. Others are 'poststructuralist', considering the narration of exile as a celebration of transgressiveness, hybridity, and otherness. This type of exile moves away from a political, cultural, economic idea of exile to an understanding of exile in a wider existential sense. The volume presents readings of Irish literature, history and culture that reflect some of the historical, sociological, psychological and philosophical dimensions of exile in the 1800s and 1900s. The theme of exile is discussed in a wide range of texts including literature, political writings and song-writing, either in works of Irish writers not normally associated with exile, or in which new aspects of 'exile' can be discerned. This book examines how Irishness as national narrative is consistently understood ‘from a distance’. Irish Presidents, critics, and media initiatives focus on how Irishness is a global resource chiefly informed by the experiences of an Irish diaspora predominantly working in English, while also reminding Irish people ‘at home’ that Irish is the 'national tongue'.
