This book is a humanistic inquiry into the nature of feeling, with particular emphasis upon the way that imagination, idealization, consummation, and the aesthetic contribute not only to the texture of our experience but also to the values that are generated by means of them. Love, sex, and compassion are studied as modes of attachment that human beings create, very often as the outcome of prior failures in their personal relations.

Unfolds the internal connection between Heidegger's ontology of human existence and Kant's attempt to establish an ethic of obligation. Shows that the faculty Kant identified for applying a rule in a specific case, namely, the transcendental imagination, is the basis for moral judgments. This conclusion substantiates Heidegger's central thesis in Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics that the imagination is the ultimate root of human reason.

The Psychology Of The Imagination written by Jean-Paul Sartre and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-15 with Philosophy categories.

The Psychology of the Imagination was originally published in France in 1940 under the title of L'Imaginaire. It was specifically designed as an essay in phenomenology and it constitutes the first attempts to introduce Husserl's work into French culture, and from there to the English speaking world. Published three years before Being and Nothingness , it reveals Sartre's first extended examination of such concepts as nothingness and freedom, both here derived from the consciousness's ability to imagine objects not only as they are but as they are not, and to imagine objects not in existence. According to Sartre, an object can be given to us in three ways: by perceiving it, by having an idea of it, and by imagining it (having an image of it). Although we may try to respond to the image in the same way as we would to the object itself, the fact remains that an image, however vivid, presents its object as not being. It was in The Psychology of Imagination that Sartre first brought together his new enthusiasm for phenomenology with the analysis of the preconditions for human freedom which was to figure so prominently in his later philosophical works.

"To explain more is to understand better". This is the mantra by which French philosopher Paul Ricoeur lived and worked, establishing himself as one of the twentieth century's most lucid and broad-ranging critical thinkers. A prisoner of war at 27, Ricoeur was also Dean of Paris X Nanterre during the student disturbances of 1968. In later years he became an outspoken champion of social justice. In work as in life, Ricoeur was committed to the challenges of conflict and the prospect of authentic resolution. Deeply indebted to phenomenology and the hermeneutical tradition of Heidegger and Gadamer, Ricoeur was also an advocate of structural linguistics, of psychoanalysis, and a rare conversant with the Anglo-American analytic tradition. This volume explores how literature and the conflicts of literary-theoretical debate inform Ricoeur's theory of imagination and understanding, and how Ricoeur's unique mode of literary reflection resolves the conflicts of literature's theoretical heyday, presaging a new direction for literary studies.

Sufism and Theology are two major currents in Islamic thought and religious culture, and over the centuries they have displayed immense diversity and intellectual richness. This book takes a flexible and inclusive approach to these trends, revealing both how Sufis approached theological traditions and themes and practised theology themselves, and how theologians approached different aspects of Sufism. Comprising chapters by leading specialists in the field, this volume is the first to explore the historically complex interface between these two major currents, highlighting key points of tension and interaction. Taking us through an array of subjects, including hermeneutics, psychology and metaphysics, light is shed on major intellectual trends and figures from the 12th century up to the modern period. These range from al-Hallaj, Ibn 'Arabi and Ibn Sab'in, to Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Ibn Taymiyya, Haydar Amuli and Ibn Kemal Pasha, from the Ottoman context to the Safavid, and from Sunnism to Shi'ism
