What makes individuals what they are? How should they judge their social and political interaction with the world? What makes them authentic or inauthentic? This original and provocative study explores the concept of "authenticity" and its relevance for radical politics. Weaving together close readings of three 20th century thinkers: Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers and Jean-Paul Sartre with the concept of authenticity, Stephen Eric Bronner illuminates the phenomenological foundations for self-awareness that underpin our sense of identity and solidarity. He claims that different expressions of the existential tradition compete with one another in determining how authenticity might be experienced, but all of them ultimately rest on self-referential judgments. The author’s own new framework for a political ethic at once serves as a corrective and an alternative. Wonderfully rich, insightful, and nuanced, Stephen Eric Bronner has produced another bookshelf staple that speaks to crucial issues in politics, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. Existentialism, Authenticity, Solidarity will appeal to scholars, students and readers from the general public alike.

Great philosophers such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Sartre have clearly been preoccupied by the possibility of authenticity. In this study, Jacob Golomb looks closely at the literature and writings of these philosophers in his analysis of their ethics. Golomb's writings shows his passionate commitment to the quest for the authenticity - particularly in our climate of post-modern scepticism. He argues that existentialism is all the more pertinent and relevant today when set against the general disillusionment which characterises the late twentieth century. This book is invaluable reading for those who have been fascinated by figures like Camus's Meursault, Sartre's Matthieu and Nietzsche's Zarathustra.

The Jargon Of Authenticity written by Theodor Adorno and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Social Science categories.

Theodor Adorno was no stranger to controversy. In The Jargon of Authenticity he gives full expression to his hostility to the language employed by certain existentialist thinkers such as Martin Heidegger. With his customary alertness to the uses and abuses of language, he calls into question the jargon, or 'aura', as his colleague Walter Benjamin described it, which clouded existentialists' thought. He argued that its use undermined the very message for meaning and liberation that it sought to make authentic. Moreover, such language - claiming to address the issue of freedom - signally failed to reveal the lack of freedom inherent in the capitalist context in which it was written. Instead, along with the jargon of the advertising jingle, it attributed value to the satisfaction of immediate desire. Alerting his readers to the connection between ideology and language, Adorno's frank and open challenge to directness, and the avoidance of language that 'gives itself over either to the market, to balderdash, or to the predominating vulgarity', is as timely today as it ever has been.

Authentic Being written by Dr. James R. McCartney and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with Philosophy categories.

This is a book about the importance of choice in the lives of people. Two philosophies, Existentialism and New Thought Philosophy, speak in their own language of taking the heros journey by accepting and expressing life authentically. This book looks at things that get in the way of choosing our true life; it is about the courageous adventure of being authentic. It is a book about you and me, it is about the evolution of human kind. This book begins by defining and comparing philosophical concepts of authenticity. It continues by looking at the expectations and rewards of achieving self-discovery through authenticity. This is followed by a brief history of New Thought Philosophy from the time of transcendentalism to the present day. Existentialism is presented in a variety of forms such as the theological as represented by Soren Kierkegaard, and the atheism of Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. We also look at the basic premises of existential psychotherapy through the eyes of Rollo May. The chapter which follows describes the work of Henri Bergsons argument with Darwins mechanistic concept of random variations in the evolutionary process of living things. The writing concludes by describing the spiritual childhood of two brothers who exemplify freedom and nave authenticity. Colorful meditations are included at the end of the book with the intention of facilitating introspection and self-acceptance.
