Gerhild Scholz Williams's Ways of Knowing in Early Modern Germany: Johannes Praetorius as a Witness to His Time, reviews key discourses in eight of Praetorius's works. She introduces the modern reader to the kinds of subjects, the intellectual and spiritual approaches to them, and the genres that this educated and productive German scholar and polymath presented to his audience in the seventeenth century. By relating these individual works to a number of contemporaneous writings, Williams shows how Praetorius constructed a panorama in print in which wonders, the occult, the emerging scientific way of thinking, family and social mores are recurrent themes. Included in Praetorius's portrait of the mid-seventeenth-century are discussions of Paracelsus's scientific theories and practice; early modern German theories on witchcraft and demonology and their applications in the seventeenth century. Furthermore, we read about the early modern beginnings of ethnography, anthropology, and physical geography; gender theory, early modern and contemporary notions of intellectual property, and competing and sometimes conflicting early modern scientific and theological explanations of natural anomalies. Moreover, throughout his work and certainly in those texts chosen for this study, Praetorius appears before us as an assiduous reporter of contemporary European and pan-European events and scientific discoveries, a critic of common superstitions, as much a believer in occult causes and signs and in God's communication with His people. In his writings, in his way of telling, he offers strategies by which to comprehend the political, social, and intellectual uncertainties of his century and, in so doing, identifies ways to confront the diverse interpretive authorities and the varieties of structures of knowledge that interacted and conflicted with each other in the public arena of knowing.

There are no clear demarcation lines between magic, astrology, necromancy, medicine, and even sciences in the pre-modern world. Under the umbrella term 'magic,' the contributors to this volume examine a wide range of texts, both literary and religious, both medical and philosophical, in which the topic is discussed from many different perspectives. The fundamental concerns address issue such as how people perceived magic, whether they accepted it and utilized it for their own purposes, and what impact magic might have had on the mental structures of that time. While some papers examine the specific appearance of magicians in literary texts, others analyze the practical application of magic in medical contexts. In addition, this volume includes studies that deal with the rise of the witch craze in the late fifteenth century and then also investigate whether the Weberian notion of disenchantment pertaining to the modern world can be maintained. Faust, der mit dem Teufel einen Pakt schließt, um seine Pläne zu verwirklichen, gilt als Symbolfigur des modernen Menschen. Doch bereits das frühe Christentum kennt Teufelsbündner-Gestalten; einer von ihnen ist Theophilus. Ein anonymer byzantinischer Autor hat im 7. Jahrhundert die Geschichte seiner Errettung durch Maria gestaltet. Im 9. Jahrhundert übermittelte die Übersetzung des neapolitanischen Diakons Paulus Text, Stoff und Figur ans Abendland. Anschließend machte Theophilus im Zeichen der sich verbreiternden Marienverehrung erst in lateinischen, dann volkssprachigen Texten bis ins Jesuitendrama eine große literarische Karriere. Zahlreich sind zudem die Rezeptionszeugnisse in Skulptur, Buch-, Wand- und Glasmalerei des Mittelalters. Die Edition macht die bedeutendste deutschsprachige Fassung, das niederdeutsche Spiel des 15. Jahrhunderts, auf der Basis der Ausgabe Robert Petschs (1908) erneut, und dank Paralleldruck von H und S besser zugänglich. Sie erschließt das Werk sodann erstmals durch eine Übersetzung sowie einen Sprach- und Sachkommentar. Eine Einführung vermittelt wesentliche Fakten zur Stoffgeschichte und Werküberlieferung und erörtert im Horizont literatur-, frömmigkeits- und mediengeschichtlicher Interessen Grundprobleme des Textverständnisses. Die Theophilus-Ikonographie dokumentiert schließlich ein breit angelegter Literaturbericht.
