Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Existentialism is a mood, not a philosophy. It can be traced back to anguished novelists of the nineteenth century, and beyond that to Blaise Pascal, who was terrified by the silence of infinite spaces. #2 The phenomenologists’ leading thinker, Edmund Husserl, provided a rallying cry, To the things themselves! It meant: don’t waste time on the interpretations that accrue upon things, and don’t wonder whether the things are real. Just look at this that’s presenting itself to you, and describe it as precisely as possible. #3 Sartre was extremely excited about the prospect of studying with Husserl’s student Emmanuel Levinas. He had barely developed any philosophical ideas of his own, but he was ready to absorb the philosophical energy of others. #4 Sartre's philosophy is based on the idea that humans are their own freedom. We create ourselves through action, and this is so fundamental to our human condition that it is the human condition from the moment of first consciousness to the moment of death.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was the father of existentialism. He was born in Copenhagen in 1813. He entered the University of Copenhagen in 1830, but it took him more than a decade to finish his degree. He passed his exams in 1840 and a year later completed his dissertation, On the Concept of Irony: With Constant Reference to Socrates. #2 Kierkegaard wrote about the relation between ethics and religion, and he suggested that faith was about the attempt to follow Christ in his self-denial, suffering, and ultimately in his humiliation. He no longer wanted to participate in making a fool of God. #3 The ethical is the universal, and it applies to everyone at all times. It is immanent in itself and has nothing outside itself that is its end, but it is its own end. The single individual, sensuously and psychically qualified in immediacy, is the individual who has his end in the universal. #4 Faith is the paradox that the individual is higher than the universal, yet justified before it. It is a higher position that cannot be mediated, and yet it exists eternally. It is this paradox that Abraham believed in, and it is this paradox that makes faith exist.

'Existential Media' revisits existential philosophy through a reappreciation of Karl Jaspers' philosophy, and of his concept of the limit situation: those ultimate moments in life - of loss, crisis and guilt - which we are called upon to seize. Introducing the field of existential media studies in conversation with disability studies, the new materialism and the environmental humanities, the book offers a media theory of the limit situation which brings limits, in all their shapes and forms, onto the radar when we interrogate media.

This book explores what it means to exist in virtual worlds. Chiefly drawing on the philosophical traditions of existentialism, it articulates the idea that — by means of our technical equipment and coordinated practices — human beings disclose contexts or worlds in which they can perceive, feel, act, and think. More specifically, this book discusses how virtual worlds allow human beings to take new perspectives on their values and beliefs, and explore previously unexperienced ways of being. Virtual Existentialism will be useful for scholars working in the fields of philosophy, anthropology, media studies, and digital game studies.

Digital Existence written by Amanda Lagerkvist and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-20 with Social Science categories.

Digital Existence: Ontology, Ethics and Transcendence in Digital Culture advances debates on digital culture and digital religion in two complementary ways. First, by focalizing the themes ‘ontology,’ ‘ethics’ and ‘transcendence,’ it builds on insights from research on digital religion in order to reframe the field and pursue an existential media analysis that further pushes beyond the mandatory focus in mainstream media studies on the social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of digitalization. Second, the collection also implies a broadening of the scope of the debate in the field of media, religion and culture – and digital religion in particular – beyond ‘religion,’ to include the wider existential dimensions of digital media. It is the first volume on our digital existence in the budding field of existential media studies.

Medienanthropologische Szenen written by Christiane Voss and has been published by Brill Fink this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-10 with Human beings categories.

The fundamental insight in media theory, that media fundamentally change our world, suppresses or even eliminates the category of 'the human' by focusing on technical media. "Scenes of Media Anthropology" applies media philosophy to criticize this techno-centric approach, while addressing the lack of concern for media effects in cultural anthropology. Rather than focus on the question of what humans are, the articles in this volume explore modes of existence and self-conception as effects of concrete situation-dependent media conditions.
