DO WE DARE TO CONFRONT THE EARLY CHURCH? Still bathed in the afterglow of Christ's appearance, the early church remained chaste for Him by the only means available to it-and to us-self-judgment. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God. (I Pet 4:17) Try the spirits whether they are of God. (I John 4:1) For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (I Cor 11:31) Self-examination, let us remember, is the core of Jesus's teaching: Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own? (Matt 7:3) When the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? (Lk 18:8) The thread from which the very life of the church hangs is nothing more nor less than searching self-scrutiny. Yet, our churches have ignored Christ's command of self-examination, and the apostles' command of self-judgment, as if churches were above criticism simply because they are churches. With such imperatives constraining us from across two millennia, no justification can possibly be offered for the massive failure of our churches to judge themselves, especially in view of their readiness to judge other churches and the world outside. Only if we rediscover the sacredly imposed humility of self-judgment does revitalization await us. Without it, no revival, no renewal, no reform is possible. Do we dare vest ourselves in the self-scrutiny of the early church as we grope in the darkness of the twenty-first century? Charles W. WHERE DOES ONE GO TO CHURCH THESE DAYS TO HEAR THIS? How many times have we heard teachers consign the Son of God's Great Sermon to adjunct status, that is, to mere secondary righteousness, mere incidental ethics, now exceeded by the "grace" that is by faith in His death and resurrection? On the contrary, however, by Christ's own words what He proclaims from the Mount exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. It also exceeds the righteousness ("grace") of present day scribes and Pharisees. Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter the kingdom of God. (Matthew 5:20) This clause built in to the Great Sermon by Christ Himself will not allow it to be "exceeded" by any righteousness, not even the "grace" of glib preachers, for the Sermon on the Mount is grace. God gave Jesus Christ many weeks and months to lay down His teachings before His death on the cross. Had God not done that, all we would have to do would be to believe that "Jesus died for me." But because Christ left behind glorious teachings that must be lovingly incarnated in our lives, we may not just believe that "Jesus died for me." His teachings are the necessary conditions, the required prerequisites, of salvation, for Jesus Christ will not go where His teachings are ignored. This book takes up a loving restoration of the Sermon on the Mount to its central position in the salvation of the human soul. Author Bio: Charles W. As seen from the perspective of 1492, the medieval expansion of Latin Europe was nowhere as dramatic or enduring as in the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic. Its Christian kingdoms continued their advance against Al-Andalus up to 1492, whereas territorial expansion elsewhere against the Muslim world had either ceased or subsided by the late 13th century. Castile and Portugal also transformed the Atlantic Ocean from the inaccessible dead-end of Eurasia into the most promising avenue for European expansion for the first time in history. Missions, States, and European Expansion in Africa aims to explore the ways Christianity and colonialism acted as hegemonic or counter hegemonic forces in the making of African societies. As Western interventionist forces, Christianity and colonialism were crucial in establishing and maintaining political, cultural, and economic domination. Indeed, both elements of Africa's encounter with the West played pivotal roles in shaping African societies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This volume uses a wide range of perspectives to address the intersection between missions, evangelism, and colonial expansion across Africa. The contributors address several issues, including missionary collaboration with the colonizing effort of European powers; disagreements between missionaries and colonizing agents; the ways in which missionaries and colonial officials used language, imagery, and European epistemology to legitimize relations of inequality with Africans; and the ways in which both groups collaborated to transform African societies. Thus, Missions, States, and European Expansion in Africa transcends the narrow boundaries that often separate the role of these two elements of European encounter to argue that missionary endeavours and official colonial actions could all be conceptualized as hegemonic institutions, in which both pursued the same civilizing mission, even if they adopted different strategies in their encounter with African societies.
