Since 1960, the USDA has provided estimates of annual expenditures on children from birth through age 17. This report presents the 2011 estimates for husband-wife and single-parent families. Expenditures are provided by age of children, household income level, major budgetary component (housing, food, etc.), and region. This survey is the most comprehensive source of information on household expenditures available at the national level. The sample consisted of 11,800 husband-wife households and 3,350 single-parent households and was weighted to reflect the U.S. population of interest by using BLS weighting methods. The report concludes that a child born in 2011 will cost $234,900 to raise. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Since 1960, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided annual estimates of expenditures on children. The method used by USDA in determining child-rearing expenses specifically examines the intra-household distribution of expenditures. Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) data for each budgetary component are used to do so. The CE contains child-specific expenditure data for some budgetary components (clothing, child care, and education) and household level expenditure data for the other budgetary components (housing, food, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services). Child-specific expenses are assigned directly to children, and household-level expenses are assigned to children on a per capita basis or based on other research. For the overall United States in 2000, child-rearing expense estimates ranged between $8,740 and $9,860 for a child in a two-child, married-couple family in the middle-income group. Alternative estimates of child-rearing expenses also are reviewed and compared with the USDA estimates.
