A Tiger Remembers written by Ann Wee and has been published by NUS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-21 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
Born in the Year of the Fire Tiger, Ann Wee moved to Singapore in 1950 to marry into a Singaporean Chinese family. One of Singapore’s pioneering social work educators, Ann shares her experiences frankly and with great humour. She remembers the things that history books leave out: questions of hygiene, the emotional nuance in social relations, stories of ghost wives and changeling babies, rural clan settlements and migrant dormitories, what was lost and gained when families moved into HDB estates. Affectionately observed and wittily narrated, with a deep appreciation of how far Singapore has changed, this book brings to life the country’s social transformation by talking about the family, “in its 101 different shapes and sizes, with its capacity to cope which ranges from truly marvellous to distinctly tatty: still, in one form or another, the best place for most of us to be”.

The history of Singapore has been widely conflated with the history of its economic success. From its heyday as a nexus of trade during the imperial era to the modern city state that boasts high living standards for most of its citizens, the history of Singapore is commonly viewed through the lens of the ruling elite. Published in two volumes in 1998 and 2000, Lee Kuan Yew's memoirs The Singapore Story epitomizes this top-down definitive narrative of the nation's past. The history of post-war Singapore has largely been reduced to a series of decisions made by the nation's leaders. Few existing studies explore the role and experiences of the ordinary person in Singapore's post-war history. There are none that do this through ethnography, oral history, and collective biography. In a critical study that has no parallel among existing works on Singapore history, this book dispenses with the homogenous historical experience that is commonly presumed in the writing of Singapore's national past after 1945 and explores how the enforcement of a uniform language policy by the Singapore government for cultural and economic purposes has created underappreciated social and economic divides among the Chinese of Singapore both between and within families. It also demonstrates how mapping distinct economic, linguistic, and cultural cleavages within Singaporean Chinese society can add new and critical dimensions to understanding the nation's past and present. Chief among these, the author argues, are the processes behind the creation and entrenchment of class structures in the city state, such as the increasing value of English as a form of opportunity-generating capital.

Brimming with verve and dramatic incident, Singapore: A Biography offers fresh insights into the life story of this island city-state through the personal experiences of the workers, adventurers, rulers and revolutionaries who have shaped its history over the last seven centuries. The authors, drawing on research undertaken in collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore, have woven together ancient chronicles, eyewitness accounts, oral histories and even modern radio and television broadcasts to create a vivid and compelling narrative that brings the past back to life. Grounded in scholarship yet fired by the imagination, this book reveals the Singapore story to have been as rich, diverse and multilayered as the city-state is prosperous, ordered and successful today.

Singapore School Principals Leadership Stories written by Zoe Suan Loy Boon and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-09 with Education categories.
This book is undertaken by the author who has personally walked the journey of a classroom teacher, middle leader and school principal in the Singapore education system. It is a culmination of two research projects undertaken in two phases — the first is derived from the PhD Thesis entitled The Making of School Principals in Singapore and the second is based on interviews with school principals who have retired from the Singapore education system. Both research projects provide invaluable input to describe the four career phases of school leadership, that is, formation, accession, incumbency, and divestiture. This research describes how the formative years of a school principal have tremendous impact on who the principal is, and how the values and beliefs of an aspiring/potential school leader serve to guide him/her in taking on the principalship post. This well-structured book is both exploratory and descriptive. It provides the necessary background for anyone interested in understanding school leadership as a career. More specifically, it will be of value to educators and stakeholders interested in understanding the nature of school leadership in the Singapore education system.
