The night shift environment in acute care nursing is a unique and poorly understood entity. Retention of experienced nurses on the night shift is vital to the provision of quality care and the nurturing of new nurses. The goal of this phenomenological study was to elicit a description of the lived experience of experienced night shift nurses with the goal of gleaning information that would improve the work environment on the night shift. Five experienced night shift RNs participated in self-directed interviews, responding to the question, "Can you please share your experiences as an RN working the night shift?" The interview data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method to arrive at a typical and essential structure of the experience. The results revealed negative and positive aspects of working a night shift schedule. Negative aspects of night shift nursing included a feeling of being misunderstood and undervalued professionally and personally. Inadequate resources, on the night shift, was also identified as a barrier to nurse satisfaction, and negatively influencing the provision of quality nursing care and quality orientation of new nurses. Negative physiologic influences of night shift centered around poor quality and quantity of sleep. While these negative influences were consistently presented by all participants, so were the positive aspects of night shift nursing. The participants of this study were strongly invested in the teamwork they experienced within their night shift work environment. Interdependent team spirit was found to have arisen in response to the lack of resources experienced by these nurses. This teamwork, along with the other positive aspects, such as autonomous practice and positive effects on personal time, were seen as incentives for these experienced nurses to continue nursing on the night shift. Nursing administration may be able to utilize the information gleaned from this study to optimize the night shift work environment, and subsequently, increase retention of the experienced nurse. Further research is needed to clarify: the needs of experienced nurses in varying clinical settings, the needs of inexperienced night shift nurses, and the representativeness of the data found in this study to larger numbers of nurses.

The capstone research project examined and critically appraised 15 research articles. These 15 articles were based on the side effects that can occur to night-shift workers who are experiencing sleep deprivation. Discussion that night-shift workers tend to be much more sleepdeprived than day-shift workers. Education is the main focus. If education can be brought to administration, management, and nursing staff regarding the issues that sleep deprivation can cause then interventions can be put into effect and sleep deprivation can be lessened. By correcting/or lessening the issue of sleep deprivation problems can be avoided or diminished. The capstone project thoroughly review aspects of the problem, solution, implementation, evaluation, dissemination, review of all the literature used, and appendices which includes a handout and a survey to assist with education and evaluation of the research project. Sleep deprivation can cause significant issues: in patient care related to medical errors, issues for nurses in their home life, issues with nurses health, and can cause car accidents driving home from work from being severely fatigue. Two interventions discussed in the research project is changing a night-shift workers circadian rhythm to a night-shift schedule and nurses being allowed to take a restorative nap during their 12-hour night shift. Research shows that changing a person's circadian rhythm would help lessen fatigue and health issues, but this is very hard to achieve with the daily demands of society. The majority of society works day-shift hours, so this make night-shift the minority. Taking a restorative nap also shows to decrease fatigue and issues. Taking a restorative nap has proven to be beneficial as an approach to decrease fatigue, increase work performance, and increase alertness in nurses working long hours during nightshift hours (Fallis, McMillan, and Edwards, 2011). The intervention of taking a restorative nap is a feasible option if administration, management, and nursing staff can be educated on this option and advocate for this option. A restorative nap would cause improved nurse and patient safety. The more people that are educated the easier and faster changes can occur.

Hospitals are centers of continuous activity because there are constant admissions, discharges and emergency situations. In situations like these nurse must remain alert, prepared and professional. Nurses must provide the necessary care of patients who arrive at the hospital while meeting the standards of the hospital. Nurses have to quickly act to solve any issues that arise during their shifts and complete all the tasks they are assigned to must dissolve any problems that come up during their shift. In order to solve issues, nurses must be alert and ready to face the tasks. It is, however, difficult for night shift to remain alert compared to day shift nurses; it is harder for than to act immediately and be quick thinkers because most of them experience the hazardous effects of sleep deprivation. Nurses experiencing sleep deprivation are at higher risks of making mistakes during their work. It is extremely important for nurses, regardless of which shift they work, to be well-rested so they can be fully prepared for work. Nurses need to be educated about the hazards of sleep deprivation and how it affect their personal health as well as their work (Johnson, 2010).

Long Term Night Shift Health Issues written by Angela Dupuis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Burn out (Psychology) categories.

As most are well aware, patient care is absolutely necessary 24-hours a day 7-days a week within most hospital organizations. Therefore, nurses are essential all hours of the day and night, furthermore, expected to work various hourly shifts. There are a generous amount studies presenting that long-term night shifts are causing serious health issues among nursing staff and also physicians. Nurses and patients suffer due to reduced sleep, fatigue, and quality of health. Nurses are suffering not only health wise but also their families are experiencing less time with their loved one due to their demanding work schedules. Patients suffer by means of lack of expected care and possible patient errors by the nursing staff due to poor sleep and fatigue issues. This issue requires more attention in order to be properly addressed and transformation of these matters. Upper management must advocate for nursing staff in order to increase nurse and patient health outcomes, as well as, decrease nurse turnover rates for those burnt out by working long-term night shifts. One solution is to ask key stakeholders (nursing staff) how they would feel about working 8-hour shifts instead of 12-hour shifts. Some studies have shown better reviews from nursing staff when working 8-hour shifts. Another solution and the solution being presented within this proposal, is to ask nursing staff to rotate from day to night shift every 3-months or as needed, for those not wanting to work 8-hour shifts. Evidence shows that when shorter night shifts increments are worked, better outcomes exist.
