Modern Experimental Chemistry provides techniques of qualitative analysis that reinforce experiments on ionic equilibriums. This book includes the determination of water in hydrated salts; identification of an organic compound after determining its molecular weight; and nonaqueous titration of a salt of a weak acid. The calculation of chemical stoichiometry; calculation of thermodynamic properties by determining the change in equilibrium with temperature; and chromium chemistry are also covered. This compilation contains enough experiments for classes which have six hours of laboratory (two 3-hour meetings) per week to last two semesters. This publication is intended for chemistry students as an introductory manual to chemistry laboratory.

Excerpt from Experimental Chemistry: For High School Students This course of experiments has been arranged for students in high schools, and is intended to lead directly to the courses in the State University. Since many of the principles of chemistry are founded upon quantitative relations, a number of such experiments has been introduced; but no exercise has been incorporated into the course that has not been successfully performed. Special care has been taken in clearly describing the experiments, so that pupils may not fail to obtain good results. Considerable attention has also been given by questions and suggestions to cause the student to think carefully over observed phenomena. The use of symbols has been avoided in the earlier stages of the work, and qualitative analysis has been entirely omitted. Very little of real value can be accomplished in the way of qualitative analysis in so short a time. A number of the most important elements and their compounds has been considered, and the experiments outlined are only those which may be performed by the student during the year. The course may be modified, whenever desirable, by supplementary directions prepared by the instructor. The writer is of the opinion that a few elements and their most important compounds studied carefully, are of much more value than a great many studied hurriedly. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Excerpt from The Elements of Experimental Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is impossible to direct our views to the future im provement of this wide field of science, without deeply lamenting the privation, which we have lately sustained, of two of its most successful cultivators, Sir Humphry Davy and Dr. Wollaston, - at a period of life, too, when it seemed reasonable to have expected, from each of them, a much longer continuance of his invaluable labours. To those high gifts of nature, which are the characteris tics of genius, and which'eonstitute its very essence, both those eminent men united an unwearied industry and zeal in research, and habits of accurate reasoning, with out which even the energies of genius are inadequate to the achievement of great scientific designs. With these excellencies, common to both, they were nevertheless dis tinguishable by marked intellectual peculiarities. Bold. Replicate a chemical reaction similar to one Marie Curie used to purify radioactive elements! Distill perfume using a method created in ancient Mesopotamia by a woman named Tapputi! Aspiring chemists will discover these and more amazing role models and memorable experiments in Chemistry for Kids. This engaging guide offers a series of snapshots of 25 scientists famous for their work with chemistry, from ancient history through today. Each lab tells the story of a scientist along with some background about the importance of their work, and a description of where it is still being used or reflected in today’s world. A step-by-step illustrated experiment paired with each story offers kids a hands-on opportunity for exploring concepts the scientists pursued, or are working on today. Experiments range from very simple projects using materials you probably already have on hand, to more complicated ones that may require a few inexpensive items you can purchase online. Just a few of the incredible people and scientific concepts you'll explore: Galan b. 129 AD Make soap from soap base, oil and citrus peels. Modern application: medical disinfectants Joseph Priestly b. 1733 Carbonate a beverage using CO2 from yeast or baking soda and vinegar mixture. Modern application: soda fountains Alessandra Volta b. 1745 Make a battery using a series of lemons and use it to light a LED. Modern application: car battery Tu Youyou b. 1930 Extract compounds from plants. Modern application: pharmaceuticals and cosmetics People have been tinkering with chemistry for thousands of years. Whether out of curiosity or by necessity, Homo sapiens have long loved to play with fire: mixing and boiling concoctions to see what interesting, beautiful, and useful amalgamations they could create. Early humans ground pigments to create durable paint for cave walls, and over the next 70 thousand years or so as civilizations took hold around the globe, people learned to make better medicines and discovered how to extract, mix, and smelt metals for cooking vessels, weapons, and jewelry. Early chemists distilled perfume, made soap, and perfected natural inks and dyes. Modern chemistry was born around 250 years ago, when measurement, mathematics, and the scientific method were officially applied to experimentation. In 1896, after the first draft of the periodic table was published, scientists rushed to fill in the blanks. The elemental discoveries that followed gave scientists the tools to visualize the building blocks of matter for the first time in history, and they proceeded to deconstruct the atom. Since then, discovery has accelerated at an unprecedented rate. At times, modern chemistry and its creations have caused heartbreaking, unthinkable harm, but more often than not, it makes our lives better. With this fascinating, hands-on exploration of the history of chemistry, inspire the next generation of great scientists.

This new volume presents an up-to-date review of modern materials and physical chemistry concepts, issues, and recent advances in the field. It presents a modern theoretical and experimental approach in applied physical chemistry. The volume discusses the developments of advanced chemical products and respective tools to characterize and predict the chemical material properties and behavior. With chapters from distinguished scientists and engineers from key institutions worldwide, the volume provides understanding through numerous examples and practical applications drawn from research and development chemistry. It emphasizes the intersection of chemistry, math, physics, and the resulting applications across many disciplines of science and explores applied physical chemistry principles in specific areas. At the same time, each topic is framed within the context of a broader more interdisciplinary approach, demonstrating its relationship and interconnectedness to other areas. This new book fills a gap within modeling texts, focusing on applications across a broad range of disciplines, and presents information on many important problems in physical chemistry. These investigations are accompanied by real-life applications in practice.
