ABSTRACT: Many industrial processes including food, mining, and pharmaceuticals involve handling mixtures of granular materials. The tendency of granular materials to segregate due to differences in particle properties such as, size, shape, and density negatively affects the process efficiency and product quality. Our study focused on segregation of particles in hopper flow with the following conditions: well-mixed initial fill, funnel flow, and cylindrical hopper geometry. Glass beads and steel shots in three particle sizes each are used to investigate the effect of size ratio and density difference on particle segregation. Also, to study the effect of particle shape on segregation of particles, crushed glass in two sizes is used. Results show that size-segregation patterns are initially fines-rich and then fines-depleted at the end of discharge. Segregation increases for larger particle size ratios and decreases for fines fractions that are above 10%. The extent of segregation for mixtures of crushed glasscrushed glass is not significantly different from spherical glass mixtures. Given the same size ratio, mixtures consisting of smaller particles show less segregation. The segregation trend due to density effects is initially rich in particles with the higher density and then rich in the particles with the lower density at the end of the discharge.

Finally, experiments are performed in a hopper of identical dimensions as in the simulation to verify the model. Three specific characteristic of the flow: Three specific characteristic of the flow: discharge rate, angle of repose of the material and size of clumps formed during the discharge are investigated experimentally and compared to the simulations. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results. In general, the discharge rate decreases, angle of repose increases and size of clumps increases as cohesion increases.

Experiments and numerical simulation studies were carried. out on vertically vibrated wedge-type hoppers containing binary mixtures for the present research. The studies focussed on segregation analysis of the hopper discharge and the characterization of flow pattern of the binary mixtures in sealed hoppers, over wide ranges of frequency and amplitude of acceleration to determine the effect of these parameters. The results of segregation study show that vibration promotes segregation of the binary mixtures. However, increase in frequency was found to make the contents of segregated discharge more uniform. Also, increase in wedge angle seemed to help in reducing segregation. The experimentally observed flow patterns, showed a new type of four-loop convection pattern. The simulation studies revealed some of the experimental observations. Thus, the experimentally observed patterns included three regimes, namely, an unstable heaping state, symmetrical convection pattern, and unstable region with surface waves.

Segregation can broadly be defined as the opposite of mixing. In bulk solids technology, segregation refers to the involuntary separation of the constituents in an assembly of particles. Segregation can occur at any stage of industrial production or handling of particulate solids and can be very difficult - if not impossible - to avoid. The adverse effects of segregation include reduced blend quality and flow problems in bulk solids handling equipment. This work comprises an experimental investigation of the segregation of mineral-based construction materials and mixtures resembling these (in composition and behavior) in silos of different size (0.5-70 m3). Segregation observed at the end of complete silo emptying was analyzed by use of segregation mechanisms and discharge flow patterns. The relevant segregation mechanisms were identified at silo filling as embedding, fluidization and air-current effects whereas the impact of the discharge flow pattern - mass flow or funnel flow - was surprisingly small. The findings of this work should be of immediate interest to producers of mineral-based construction materials and industries involved in the handling of similar bulk solids.

"The spiral concentrator is a mineral processing device that separates mineral particles according to their densities and to a lesser extent particle size. In this thesis, a four-turn WALKABOUT PW1 spiral concentrator was used to investigate the particle movement inside the trough of spiral concentrator. For the experiments, a synthetic ore was prepared to mimic a real iron ore from Mont-Wright (Quebec). The sample consisted of 40% magnetite ([rho] = 5.17 g/cm3) and 60% quartz ([rho] = 2.65 g/cm3) with a size range smaller than 850 μm. In order to produce a comprehensive data set of particle distribution across the trough in every turn of spiral concentrator, the material was sampled at the end of every turn. The separation of mineral particles observed was as described in the literature, with small and dense particles tending towards the centre of the spiral, on the other hand, large light particles tending towards the outside of the spiral; and a small portion of the large heavy particles would report to the outside. The flow rate and physical properties of the slurry were analyzed from the sampled materials. A database produced from the experiment was used to build partition curves of the magnetite and quartz for every turn of the spiral. A partition curve model was applied to predict the recovery of magnetite in the virtual fifth turn of the spiral. The understanding of the separation mechanism gained in this study will be of interest to improve the design of spiral concentrator and to adjust the operational parameters of mineral concentration.
