The evolution of rf accelerator technology toward high-power, high-current, low-emittance beams produces an ever-increasing demand for efficient, very high power microwave sources. The present klystron technology has performed very well but is not expected to produce reliable gigawatt peak-power units in the 1- to 10-GHz regime. Further major advancements must involve other types of sources. The reflexing electron sources can produce microwave powers at the gigawatt level and have demonstrated operation from 800 MHz to 40 GHz. Pulse length appears to be limited by electron-beam diode closure, and reflexing electron devices have been operated in a repetitively pulsed mode. An experiment is under way to investigate concepts to stabilize the frequency of the virtual cathode source. If one can successfully frequency and phase lock this source to an external signal, then this source can operate as a very high power microwave amplifier making it practical for accelerator applications. The progress on an experiment to test these concepts will be discussed.

Experimental research is under way at Los Alamos to develop the large-orbit gyrotron and the resonant-cavity virtual cathode oscillator as very high power microwave sources. These sources, though still in an early stage of development, have demonstrated power outputs from the several hundred megawatt to the gigawatt level at various Laboratories. These devices exhibit very narrow band output, making them candidates for future accelerator drivers. Our efforts are directed toward achieving repetitively pulsed operation at pulse lengths in the microsecond regime. To provide the pulsed power for these experiments, a 1-MV, 10-kA modulator with a 1-.mu.s pulse length and a 5-Hz pulse-repetition frequency has been developed and is currently being assembled. The resonant-cavity virtual cathode source has achieved very narrow band output compared to the conventional free-running virtual cathode oscillator. Techniques are being developed for extracting the microwave power from both sources into the rectangular waveguide. The experimental effort is described and current experimental results are discussed.

The research described in this thesis details the design, construction, and experimental results in developing a virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) high power microwave (HPM) source. The HPM source utilizes two independent vircators to create simultaneous microwave signals whose frequencies are variable from approximately 1 GHz to 3 GHz. The vircators are powered by a pulsed power modulator. The modulator consists of a thyratron-switched capacitor bank that pulse charges a water transmission line through a pulse transformer. An output pulse is created by a pressurized oil switch with an output risetime of 20 ns. The capacitor bank is charged to 30 kV by a bank of power supplies. A 1:10 pulse transformer charges the water line to 300 kV in approximately 2.5 ms. The output pulse from the water line is stepped up to 250 kV by an inductive adder. This signal is utilized to simultaneously drive the two, 32 [omega] vircators in parallel with a 70 ns long pulse. Experimental results were collected for both the pulsed power system as well as the dual vircator HPM source. The vircators were characterized individually first to analyze the tunability of the sources. They were then connected in parallel to show frequency independence in order to create tunable multi-frequency HPM pulses.

At Los Alamos National Laboratory, research is continuing on the development of both the resonant-cavity virtual-cathode source and the large-orbit gyrotron high-power microwave source. The resonant-cavity virtual-cathode development effort has succeeded in demonstrating narrow-band single-mode operation of this typically wide-band source. This is accomplished by supplying feedback to the oscillating virtual cathode with a resonant-cavity structure. The large-orbit gyrotron effort is developing a method for efficiently coupling the microwave power from the device so that it can be easily used as a high-power microwave generator for accelerator applications. A repetitive pulse capability is also being developed for both microwave sources. Experimental results are presented in this paper. 3 refs., 7 figs.
