Excerpt from The Potential for Genetic Suppression of Insect Populations by Their Adaptations to Climate Examination of cases 2-6 in table 41 shows that when a conditional lethal trait is deter mined by more than one gene, the trait may be expressed in a progressively higher proportion of individuals from generation to generation. Cases 7 - 15 show that when the release strain possesses more than one conditional lethal trait, the efficiency of suppression is progressively augmented in succeeding generations. If the conditional lethal traits were expressed in the last generation of the season, release ratios ranging from to would be adequate to decimate most populations with four genera tions per year. This would require releases ranging from 100 to 500 insects per acre when the natural population consists of 10 insects per acre. Higher ratios would be required if the species had fewer than four generations per year. In most instances these ratios would have to be two to five times higher to achieve the same suppression in the F2 as in the F4. Excerpt from Fourth Report on the Injurious and Other Insects of the State of New York: Made to the Regents of the University, Pursuant to Chapter 355 of the Laws of 1883 The eggs are deposited on the twigs of plum trees in the autumn (october). They hatch at the putting out of the leaves the following spring. Three generations follow on the plum, of which the last only is winged, which at once migrates to the hop - yards. The fourth and the succeeding generations on the hop, to the eleventh inclusive, are Wingless females. The twelfth generation consists of winged males and females - the latter, agamic, and these return to plum trees in September. Here the thirteenth generation is composed of sexual Wingless females, which, after mating, deposit the eggs which are to hatch the following spring, in continuation of the species. For a detailed statement of the above, see a communication made by Mr. L. 0. Howard, of the Division of Entomology, under instructions from Professor Riley, in the Country Gentleman, for November 17, 1887, page 875, giving also the latest studies of Professor Riley upon the insect, made in England during the present autumn. Now that the winter abode of the hop-aphis has been ascertained to be on plum trees, in the egg state, thereby, to a certain extent, bringing it within our reach (some entomologists are not yet willing to concede that it does not, in part, hibernate in the soil of hop yards), it may with propriety be claimed that the practical outcome of the investigation is very great. But it is to be feared that our worthy Commissioner of Agriculture, who has lent the aid of his department to this investigation, has been over sanguine in his announcement in his report of the present year, that there is now no reason why this pest, which last year damaged the crow to the extent of hundreds of thousands of dollars, should be longer feared by hop - growers. Excerpt from Embryology of Insects and Myriapods This text is the outgrowth of a course of lectures on the embryology of insects given by the senior author over a period of twenty years and now being continued by the junior author. It goes without saying that more is offered here than is presented in the time allotted to the subject in Cornell University. From year to year new topics were introduced and old ones laid by so that now from the accumulated subject matter the material for this book has been selected. It may well be, in the opinion of some readers, that certain phases of the subject, have been overemphasized and others have not been sufficiently stressed. To this can be said only that an effort has been made to present as balanced a treatment as the available material permits and that research students must of necessity refer to original sources for details that limitation of space prevents being included here. The authors have endeavored to preserve an impartial attitude on controversial questions - presenting in Part I the chief views on debat able points and in the chapters of Part II reflecting the Opinions of the several investigators on the subject of their research.
