Household finance studies is a relatively recent field, exploring a growing understanding of how households make financial decisions relating to the functions of consumption, payment, risk management, borrowing and investing; how institutions provide goods and services to satisfy these financial functions of households; and how interventions by firms, governments and other parties affect the provision of financial services. This timely book analyses existing findings about household behavior as well as findings related to policy interventions. With international case studies, this book reviews a topic of global importance and brings a crucial up-to-date survey of the field for researchers and postgraduate students.

I show that household investment decisions depend on the manner in which information is displayed by exploiting a regulatory change which prohibited the display of past returns for any period shorter than twelve months. In this setting, the information displayed was altered but the information households could access remained the same. Using a differences-in-differences design, I find that the shock to information display caused a reduction in the sensitivity of fund flows to short-term returns, a decline in overall trade volume, and increased asset allocation toward riskier funds. These results are consistent with models of limited attention and myopic loss aversion. To further explore the concept of salience, I propose a distinction between relative and absolute salience and find evidence consistent with the latter. Overall, my findings indicate that small changes in the manner in which past performance information is displayed can have large effects on household investment behavior and potentially influence households' accumulated wealth at retirement.

This paper explores how two types of neighbor effects, referring to participation and performance effects, affect household's stock investment propensity and intensity. Using the sample of urban households in China, we find that both the higher stock participation rate and the performance in the neighborhood raises both the propensity and intensity of household stock investment, so does the stock winner rate. However, the effect of neighbor investing performance is even more pronounced than the neighbor participation. More interestingly, a broader range of households are influenced by neighbors' investment behavior, while neighbors' performance only notably affects so-called “marginal investor” with less stock holding. In addition, we also confirm that social learning is a potential channel, through which the neighbor investment behavior affects the household financial behavior. As a mediator, social learning explains larger proportion of the performance effect than participation effect.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Marburg (Finance & Accounting), language: English, abstract: Understanding when households are disposed to make risky decisions is a question of great interest for economists, sociologists, and behavioral scientists. As daily life becomes increasingly complicated, the need to make choices and decisions arises more frequently. Whether buying a new apartment, making a financial investment or accepting a lucrative job offer – individuals confront significant decisions almost every day, in various forms. One thing that all decisions share is an association with a certain amount of risk and a potential impact on individuals’ personal circumstances. People often carefully weigh whether risks should be taken and what consequences they might have. As a result, a single person thinks differently than the head of a family, who has a responsibility as a household provider. To safeguard against risks, many households seek a form of protection against possible losses. The question at hand is whether the social support produces an increased feeling of security and, by extension, an enhanced inclination to financial risk-taking. Concretely, I peruse the research questions if households that can rely on a form of social assistance (I) possess a higher financial risk tolerance and, in conclusion, (II) invest their money more strongly in the equity market. The thesis extends the literature regarding the determinants of stock holding and provides one of the first investigations exploring in greater detail the role of the households’ social environment and its repercussions on risky investment behavior.
