Excerpt from Exploración Oficial por la Primera Vez Desde el Norte de la America del Sur: Siempre por Rios, Entrando por las Bocas del Orinóco, de los Valles de Este Mismo y del Meta, Casiquiare, Rio-Negro ó Guaynia y Amazónas, Hasta Nauta en el Alto Marañon ó Amazónas, Arriba de las Bocas del Ucayali Bajada del Amazonas Vuelto de Europa a Venezuela, en 1853, de las misiones diplo maticas que se me habian confiado; en desacuerdo como me hallaba con la administracion de entónces para poder continuar prestando servicios a mi país en aquella carrera, concebí la idea, que no pude por entónces llevar a cabo, de hacer una exploracion cual nunca se habia emprendido, ni menos realizado, aun por los Españoles, desde las bocas del Orinóco al interior, siempre por ríos, hasta arriba del Ucayali en el Alto Maranon ó Amazónas, centro de las posesiones Perúanas en aquellas regiones; en circunstancias que las grandes potencias comerciales de Europa y América, comenza ban a dirigir sus miradas, justamente interesadas hacia ellas, las mas bellas y extensas del mundo, incultas, yermas y abandonadas como los tesoros desconocidos; y sin embargo, las mas aproposito para colonizar, y las únicas que ofrecen a los Europeos como a los hijos emprendedores y enérgicos de la Union americana aun comparados sus terrenos con los baldíos de estos Estados, mayores y mas efectivas ventajas en su cultivo, en su clima templado y regu lar en todas las estaciones del año, y por las facilidades multipli cadas que tendrían los colonos para comunicarse entre Si por tantos rios y canales naturales; pudiendo en definitivo llevar sus pro ductos al mercado del Amazónas en el Gran - Pará por el Orinóco, a la ciudad de Angostura; por el Esequibo, a Demerara; por el Amazónas, al Gran - Pará; y, mas tarde, por los añuentes del Ama zónas y el Plata, a buenos-ayres y Montevideo.
