The essays in Explorations of Value are drawn from work first presented at the 20th Conference of Value Inquiry. They are not mere records of conference presentations. The authors have reflected on their initial presentations. They have re-thought arguments in light of discussions at the conference. They have revised their work. All of this has combined to bring fresh ideas on important issues into carefully considered discussions. The nineteen authors of the essays do not share a common viewpoint on all problems of value inquiry. They are certainly not in agreement in their conclusions. Their concerns, however, cluster around a recognizable body of questions. Several of the authors raise fundamental questions on the nature of values and the possibility of giving them an objective status. Some of the authors raise questions about where value inquiry becomes value advocacy. They are also ready to ask whether or not advocacy is in the legitimate purview of philosophers. A number of authors set out to examine conditions of moral practice and of harming or benefiting people in general. Other authors show a concern for juxtaposing moral values and aesthetic values, in some cases to observe similarities, in some, differences. Finally, a few authors focus on particular notions such as forgiveness, intimacy, and love that are central to our lives.

It is a common phenomenon that values become part of people's self-concept. In fact, self-defining or central values are various and prevalent, and offer a myriad of psychological benefits. Central values also profoundly affect people's motivation and behavior. Central values, when assessible in a situation, are associated with greater openness for exploration. Two existing theories have offered explanations for the psychological underpinnings of the link between central value accessibility and exploration. Self-Affirmation Theory postulates that accessibility of central values offers a constructive avenue to achieve a positive self-image. As a result, people are better equipped to face uncertainty and engage in exploration. Another line of research on Adult Attachment Theory claims that the behavior systems of attachment and exploration are interconnected in adults. Because central values are rooted in social connections with others, situational accessibility of central values enhances people's secure attachment to care-giving figures. This enhanced relational resources support people's exploratory endeavors. In this dissertation, I propose a novel and a more general, though not incompatible theoretical account to explicate the link between central value accessibility and exploration. I draw on the notion of constraints from research on belief systems and conceptualize central values as a constrained system as well. I argue that the constraints of central values are maintained through three mechanisms: 1) central values are embedded in a web of other concepts; 2) central values are reinforced by behavioral mechanisms; 3) central values are shared by one's meaningful social relationships. I also delineate the psychological benefits and downsides that come with the constraints of central values. I then suggest that people react to constraints of central values by engaging in exploration to increase their experience of freedom. Here, I construe exploration as a domain-general motivational state in which people experience a desire to approach uncertain situations and objects. Exploration imparts uncertainty to the self, thereby restoring the dynamism of the self-concept. Overall, this constraint-based account of central values sheds light on how people can benefit from having central values while lessening the self-rigidity that comes with it. I also summarize existing theories on psychological balance, positing that people gravitate towards a certain psychological state that they feel most comfortable with. When they deviate from that state, they experience a tendency to return to it. I review a wide array of relevant theories on psychological balance and suggest that balance might be the nexus of otherwise disparate findings in the literature. In this context, the link between central value accessibility and exploration could be understood as people's tendency to balance the stability and dynamism of the self-concept. Across a series of five empirical studies, I find evidence in support of my main hypotheses, using a wide range of samples and contexts. In addition, I show that an interest in exploration subsequently predicts risk-taking behaviors such as choosing risky options in a lottery. I also identify an important antecedent of central values: the level of sharedness of values by one's in-group members.

Space exploration, especially the recent push for the commercialization and militarization of space, is attracting increased attention not only from the wider public and the private sector but also from scholars in a wide range of disciplines. At this moment of uncertainty about the future direction of national spaceflight programs, The Value of Science in Space Exploration defends the idea, often overlooked, that the scientific understanding of the Solar System is both intrinsically and instrumentally valuable. Drawing on research from the physical sciences, social sciences, and the humanities, James S.J. Schwartz argues further that there is truly a compelling obligation to improve upon our scientific understanding-including our understanding of space environments-and that there exists a corresponding duty to engage in the scientific exploration of the Solar System. After outlining the underpinning epistemological debates, Schwartz tackles how this obligation affects the way we should approach some of the major questions of contemporary space science and policy: Is there a need for environmental preservation in space? Should humans try to establish settlements on the Moon, Mars, or elsewhere in the Solar System, and if so, how? In answering these questions, Schwartz parleys with recent work in science policy and social philosophy of science to characterize the instrumental value of scientific research, identifying space research as a particularly effective generator of new knowledge. Additionally, whereas planetary protection policies are currently employed to prevent biological contamination only of sites of interest in the search for extraterrestrial life, Schwartz contends that all sites of interest to space science ought to be protected. Meanwhile, both space resource exploitation, such as lunar or asteroid mining, and human space settlement would result in extensive disruption or destruction of pristine space environments. The overall ethical value of these environments in the production of new knowledge and understanding is greater than their value as commercial or real commodities, and thus confirms that the exploitation and settlement of space should be avoided until the scientific community develops an adequate understanding of these environments. At a time when it is particularly pertinent to consider the ways in which space exploration might help solve some of the world's ethical and resource-driven concerns, The Value of Science in Space Exploration is a thought-provoking and much-needed examination into the world of space.
