The languages spoken by the pre-Columbian tribes of North America were many and diverse. Into the regions occupied by these tribes, travelers, traders, and missionaries have penetrated in advance of civilization, and civilization itself has marched across the continent at a rapid rate. Under these conditions the languages of the various tribes have received much study. Many extensive works have been published, embracing grammars and dictionaries; but a far greater number of minor vocabularies have been collected and very many have been published. In addition to these, the Bible, in whole or in part, and various religious books and school books, have been translated into Indian tongues to be used for purposes of instruction; and newspapers have been published in the Indian languages. Altogether the literature of these languages and that relating to them are of vast extent.

John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was a U. S. soldier, geologist, and explorer of the American West. He is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first passage through the Grand Canyon. He studied at Illinois College, Wheaton College, and Oberlin College, acquiring a knowledge of Ancient Greek and Latin but never graduating. He was elected to the Illinois Natural History Society in 1859. Due to his deep Protestant beliefs, and his social commitments, his loyalties remained with the Union, and the cause of abolishing slavery. He enlisted in the Union army as a topographer and military engineer. In 1881 he became the second director of the U. S. Geological Survey, a post he held until 1894. He was also the director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution until his death. In 1895 he published a book based on his explorations of the Colorado titled Canyons of the Colorado. Amongst his other works are Wyandot Government (1881), Indian Linguistic Families of America: North of Mexico (1891) and Truth and Error; or, The Science of Intellection (1898).

Excerpt from Essays Ethnological and Linguistic The following Papers, most of which were read before the Ethnological Society, were intended to form an introductory volume to two larger works, the one on the origin and character of the Basque language and people, the other relative to the knowledge of America possessed by the Ancients. With the exception of the Essays on the ancient languages of France and Spain, on the lost Tribes of Israel, and the first notice respecting the American Indians, which have already been published, these Papers were not prepared by the author for publication, and this circumstance will explain the repetitions which will occasionally be met with. They have been printed from the original M. S. without alteration, as I considered it more advisable to do so than lo make any verbal changes in the text. A further paper would have been written respecting the progress of the Celts through Europe, in which their passage westward was intended to be traced from the names of localities in which the word "gal" in its varying forms occurs, and from the remains of Celtic customs and usages still to be found in Eastern and Central Europe, as well as from linguistic affinities. No Notes however came into my possession from which an abstract could be given of this intended Essay, or of the work on the Basques. The geographical region of the Southern Caucasus, the lowlands between the Black and the Caspian Sees and the Armenian and Anatolian highlands is located on the peripheries of Europe from Asia. This region shares a common pre-history, with pre-Christian and pre-Muslim cultures and beliefs. The later periods, however, starting from the pre-Christian Iranian dominations, followed by the Arab conquest and the later campaigns of Seljuks, Mongols and Ottomans, had a heavy impact on the development of the region’s various ethnic languages and cultures. Nevertheless, many similarities can be found in the languages, cultures and religious traditions of the people living in this region. Armenia has often been a bridge between various cultures. Even though Armenians have succeeded in preserving their original language and culture through the centuries, many of their traditions and myths, their linguistic peculiarities, particularly in Armenian dialects, may be explained by an often long-lasting influence of other cultures, be it occidental (Hellenistic/Roman, later Byzantine and Medieval European) or oriental (Iranian, later Arab, Turkic, Mongolian, etc.) or even Caucasian. The Armenians have also left many traces in the languages and cultures of the Occident, Orient and the Caucasus. This volume gives an impressive approach to an interdisciplinary view of the linguistic and cultural properties which Armenians share with their neighbours.
