In this compilation, the authors suggest a temporal model interpretation for the stele from the Scythian "Senior" Trekhbratnyi barrow (IV-III centuries BC). The specific and unusual iconographical features of the stele are unknown in Bosporan Kingdom funerary art, however it can be interpreted not only as containing two layers but also temporal stages, which recreate consecutive phases of the Scythian eschatological myth, and Iranian eschatological beliefs in general. In the following chapter, the authors propose that since we are visually and aurally minded, it is worth inquiring into how, in Cervantes and Shakespeare, the eye and the ear are used and abused by the characters; how their interaction affects them as hearers and beholders who respond to what is happening by such processes as sympathy or antagonism; and how they make characters react in one way or another, as their actions and emotions depend on what they hear and see. Afterwards, the authors propose to explore the new linguistic context of Morocco in the midst of change, through the analysis of selected novels and theatre productions, and to discuss how current debates on language are challenging traditional ideas of identity and nationhood in the country. This collection also includes an analysis of Shakespeare in The Netherlands in education, translation, and performance, highlighting the specific impact of language, theatre system, and specific cultural conditions on performing Shakespeare on the Dutch stage. In doing so, the authors fill a gap in the literature on Shakespeare in The Netherlands.

Talks on the study of literature is a series of lectures by Arlo Bates. Bates was an American author, educator and newspaperman. Excerpt: "We are all intensely eager to know what are the possibilities of humanity. We seek knowledge of them as an heir questions searchingly concerning the extent of the inheritance which has fallen to him. Literature is the inventory of the heritage of humanity. Life is but a succession of emotions; and the earnest mind burns with desire to learn what emotions are within its possibilities. The discoverer of an unsuspected capability of receiving delight, the realization of an unknown sensation, even of pain, increases by so much the extent of the possessions of the human being to whom he imparts it."

In this groundbreaking book, Jorge J. E. Gracia explores the artistic interpretation of fiction from a philosophical perspective. Focusing on the work of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most celebrated literary figures of Latin America, Gracia offers original interpretations of twelve of Borges's most famous stories about identity and memory, freedom and destiny, and faith and divinity. He also examines twenty-four artistic interpretations of these stories—two for each—by contemporary Argentinean and Cuban artists such as Carlos Estévez, León Ferrari, Mirta Kupferminc, Nicolás Menza, and Estela Pereda. This philosophical exploration of how artists have interpreted literature contributes to both aesthetics and hermeneutics, makes new inroads into the understanding of Borges's work, and introduces readers to two of the most vibrant artistic currents today. Color images of the artworks discussed are included.

Shipwreck In Art And Literature written by Carl Thompson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-09 with Literary Criticism categories.

Tales of shipwreck have always fascinated audiences, and as a result there is a rich literature of suffering at sea, and an equally rich tradition of visual art depicting this theme. Exploring the shifting semiotics and symbolism of shipwreck, the interdisciplinary essays in this volume provide a history of a major literary and artistic motif as they consider how depictions have varied over time, and across genres and cultures. Simultaneously, they explore the imaginative potential of shipwreck as they consider the many meanings that have historically attached to maritime disaster and suffering at sea. Spanning both popular and high culture, and addressing a range of political, spiritual, aesthetic and environmental concerns, this cross-cultural, comparative study sheds new light on changing attitudes to the sea, especially in the West. In particular, it foregrounds the role played by the maritime in the emergence of Western modernity, and so will appeal not only to those interested in literature and art, but also to scholars in history, geography, international relations, and postcolonial studies.

This is the first book dedicated to examining the marital relationships of Mary and George Watts and Evelyn and William De Morgan as creative partnerships. The study demonstrates how they worked, individually and together, to support greater gender equality and female liberation in the nineteenth century. The author traces their relationship to early and more recent feminism, reclaiming them as influential early feminists and reading their works from twentieth-century theoretical perspectives. By focusing on neglected female figures in creative partnerships, the book challenges longstanding perceptions of them as the subordinate wives of famous Victorian artists and of their marriages as representatives of the traditional gender binary. This is also the first academic critical study of Mary Watts?s recently published diaries, Evelyn De Morgan?s unpublished writings and other previously unexplored archival material by the Wattses and the De Morgans.
