As a travel destination, Florida provides visitors with sun, sand, and a wide array of attractions, water, and theme parks. The tourism and attraction business within the state has been flourishing since the 19th century when railroads, hotels, and the allure of the unknown brought travelers to Florida. When automobiles, airplanes, and air conditioning made the landscape accessible to more people and tolerable under the Florida sun in the postwar era, travelers once again began to frequent the Sunshine State. In the mid-twentieth century, Florida residents saw an opportunity to capitalize on the mythology and majesty associated with the landscape and history of their state and began to open small attractions. These attractions varied, with everything from exotic birds, extravagant gardens, sea sponges, and even western theme parks. Kitsch was often employed by many as a device to entice visitors. Today the tourism and attraction market is vastly different in Florida; beaches, Miami, and Walt Disney World along with other large theme parks vying for the top spot are among the top attractions but some vestiges of old Florida tourism remain.

This unusual, richly illustrated guidebook details Florida's historic pioneer and cracker villages, describing the homes, work-ways and folk-ways of the states early settlers, through preserved and tangible objects and structures. Across the state, dedicated local historians and community groups have carefully preserved and moved 19th- and early 20th-century structures, including both homes and workplaces, to specially created villages in order to display the lives of Florida pioneers. The tools, houses, farms, gardens, barns, sugar and turpentine mills, churches and schools that are gathered into twenty separate sites are described here, for the first time in a single volume. Through the rich collections of household utensils, mills, and structures, the visitor can appreciate the details of the everyday life, work, hardships, and recreation of past generations of Floridians. The book is an indispensable handbook and guide for the casual or dedicated historic tourist as well as for parents and teachers seeking to expose young people to the vanishing lifestyles of Florida's pioneers. Contact information, hours, special events, and detailed descriptions of each structure at the sites provide the casual or dedicated visitor with both practical facts for arranging trips, and the specific family histories of the pioneers who built and lived in the homes.

The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Ocean breezes. Tropical islands. All accessible by bicycle or on foot along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, a 109-mile bike route from Key West to Key Largo. This book is a mile-by-mile guide for you to explore the Florida Keys under your own power while following the Overseas Heritage Trail across dozens of historic railroad bridges and past lengthy ocean panoramas that only the Florida Keys can offer.Going by bike or by foot means taking the Florida Keys at a leisurely pace, savoring the journey, and discovering natural places and historic sites that visitors in cars simply whiz right past without realizing what they're missing. It also means that the trail slips back into history and nature along Old US 1 on some of the islands, taking you away from the highway to offer up views of mangrove marshes, salt flats, and wide open turquoise waters. On a bicycle, you can more easily take advantage of the side trips we mention throughout the guide, to better enjoy the "off the beaten path" corners of the Florida Keys.Throughout the guide, we provide details as to when you do and don't have a bike path to follow, information on campgrounds and inexpensive lodgings along the route, and recommendations for more luxurious stays at resorts and hotels. We share our favorites among the many eateries in the Keys as well. You'll learn about parks and natural areas along the route, and a little history about the Overseas Railroad, which shut down in 1935. The trail mostly follows its route. This is a trail guide, and a travel guide. In addition to the mile-by-mile descriptions of every waypoint of interest along the Overseas Heritage Trail, you'll find out how to connect to the mainland by bicycle or on foot, how to get you and your bicycle to Key West from the Miami airport, and where the bike shops are along the route. We list bike shops and outfitters who rent bicycles for the ride, as well.
