Anyone interested in Rome or in gardens or in the ancient history of Spain and Portugal should find much delight in this book. Of the hundreds, perhaps thousands of magnificent Roman villas that once dotted the Iberian country side, only about 60 have enough remaining to identify the presence of a garden. This book brings together the archaeological findings on these gardens. Most of them were also visited, and site descriptions and photographs are included in this book. It was inspired by Professor Wilhelmina F. Jashemski, whose infectious enthusiasm for Roman civilization and gardens in particular captured the hearts and minds of many who would otherwise have never have given the subject a moment's thought. In the last years of her life, she led a group of scholars in an effort to write a comprehensive book to be called The Gardens of the Roman Empire. Like her book, The Gardens of Pompeii, it was to have two volumes. The first would have synthesis chapters on subjects such as water or sculpture or plants in the gardens, while the second volume would be a catalog of all known Roman gardens. The material in this present book was originally prepared to be part of that second volume. It was read and approved by her in the format presented here. After her death it was decided to rearrange the material alphabetically for scholars. The format of the present volume, however, is better suited for explorers, whether they be exploring with their imagination of tramping the plains of Lusitania.

The following volume comprises a collection of three essays (in the form of chapters) on the theme of the Roman garden as a source of various types of archaeological information. Each chapter takes a different approach (theoretical, methodological, and empirical) when considering a particular aspect of the garden. The first chapter approaches the garden from a theoretical perspective, asking if it is possible to approach the question of the Roman garden in the same way scholars approach texts. Using John Moreland's definition of what texts are and what texts do, gardens are compared to texts using three different sets of criteria: that they are created things, that they can encode memory and other information, and that they have power or agency. The second chapter is based in methodological approaches, focusing on palynological analysis and its relationship to garden archaeology. The chapter discusses new developments in palynology as they apply to reconstructing taxonomic profiles for garden sites, especially focusing on the relatively novel use of plaster-sourced pollen in reconstructing the gardens of the Roman Mediterranean. The third chapter takes an empirical and interpretive approach to the garden's ability to encode political programs in its flora, and explores the ways in which the Garden Room at the Villa of Livia ad Gallinas Albas displays Augustan political messages. The chapter further explores how Roman garden paintings are able to inform an understanding of the appearance of physical gardens, and how these gardens and their encoded programs might be perceived through the physical experience of them.

In Gardens of the Roman Empire, the pioneering archaeologist Wilhelmina F. Jashemski sets out to examine the role of ancient Roman gardens in daily life throughout the empire. This study, therefore, includes for the first time, archaeological, literary, and artistic evidence about ancient Roman gardens across the entire Roman Empire from Britain to Arabia. Through well-illustrated essays by leading scholars in the field, various types of gardens are examined, from how Romans actually created their gardens to the experience of gardens as revealed in literature and art. Demonstrating the central role and value of gardens in Roman civilization, Jashemski and a distinguished, international team of contributors have created a landmark reference work that will serve as the foundation for future scholarship on this topic. An accompanying digital catalogue will be made available at: www.gardensoftheromanempire.org.

My dissertation, Cultivating Empire in Ancient Roman Gardens: Unearthing the Tangled Relationship between Plants and their Gardeners, is focused on the rapid blossoming of a new cross-Mediterranean plant trade, burgeoning horticultural innovation, and rise of a new gardener class in the first centuries BCE and CE. Centered on questions of plant agency, I develop a new plant-centric approach for the study of ancient Roman gardens by identifying and exploring the entangled relationship between ornamental plants and their enslaved, freed, and free gardeners-a group of non-elites that has largely been ignored. To this end, the project is interdisciplinary, drawing on gardeners' funerary inscriptions, textual descriptions of gardeners and plants, archaeological and archaeobotanical evidence from excavated gardens and garden representations. I also utilize comparative case studies, including interviews with contemporary Italian gardeners and designers, and documentation of pre-industrial free and enslaved garden labor in early modern Italian gardens and American Antebellum plantations. My work is directly informed by my experience as a garden archaeologist working in the Bay of Naples region, where my colleagues and I have developed and implemented some of the newest garden archaeology methodologies, such as plaster sampling for pollen (our team is the first to implement this method in Italy) and Lidar scanning of preserved garden contouring.
