Es usado como abono y ocasionalmente como explosivo. El nitrato de amonio se obtiene por neutralizacion de acido nitrico con amoniaco tras la evaporacion del agua: El nitrato de amonio se utiliza sobre todo como fertilizante por su buen contenido en nitrogeno. El nitrato es aprovechado directamente por las plantas mientras que el amonio es oxidado por los microorganismos presentes en el suelo a nitrito o nitrato y sirve de abono de mas larga duracion. Una parte de la produccion se dedica a la produccion del oxido nitroso (N2O) mediante la termolisis controlada: Esta reaccion es exotermica y puede ser explosiva si se lleva a cabo en un contenedor cerrado o calentando demasiado rapido. Exerceu o cargo de pesquisador titular do Centro Tecnológico do Exército (CTEx)1 . Atualmente é pesquisador e professor do programa de mestrado em Engenharia Nuclear do IME2 .Conhecido por ter desvendado em sua tese de doutorado os segredos da bomba termonuclear3 4 . Girão Barroso desenvolveu, em sua tese, um modelo matemático para simulação computacional de um moderno e compacto explosivo termonuclear, com resultados, inclusive, coincidentes com os dados da ogiva W87, um dos artefatos mais modernos do arsenal nuclear estadunidense. Por causa disso, foi citado nos telegramas diplomáticos vazados pelo Wikileaks, primeiramente por suspeitas do governo estadunidense de espionagem, e também pela suspeita por parte dos EUA de um programa nuclear secreto supostamente contrariando o Tratado de Não-Proliferação Nuclear. 5 . Baseado nesta desconfiança os EUA pressionaram a Agência Internacional de Energia Atômica (AIEA) a exigir explicações do governo brasileiro, e chegando a propor o recolhimento do livro "A Física dos Explosivos Nucleares", que trata em nível teórico e acadêmico dos temas mais importantes relacionados à física dos explosivos nucleares.3 5 Esta exigência foi considerada pelas autoridades militares brasileiras como "intromissão indevida da AIEA em atividades acadêmicas de uma instituição subordinada ao Exército Brasileiro".5

In November, 1986, the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy held the 'Mining Latin AmericalMineria Latinoamericana' conference in Chile - a conference covering a broad range of topics relevant to South America and, in that sense, complementary to its regional 'Asian Mining' and 'African Mining' series of events. This first conference proved to be a resounding success and confirmed that Chile, in particular, and South America, in general, were indeed ideal for the Institution in the pursuit of its objective of disseminating information related to the international minerals industry. In relation to South America, the Chilean conference was followed, in 1988, by that entitled 'Silver - exploration, mining and treatment', * which was held in Mexico City; in February, 1995, Caracas will host the 'Mineral resources of VenezuelalRecursos minerales de Venezuela' conference, serious planning for which is under way as I write. The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in association with the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas de Chile, Mineria Chilena and Latinomineria agreed that the second 'Mining Latin AmericalMineria Latinoamerica' conference should be held, again in Santiago, in May, 1994, on the occasion of the 1994 Expomin show, which had been been particularly successful in attracting visitors from mining countries worldwide in 1992 and which will continue, at two-yearly intervals, to the year 2000 and, no doubt, beyond.
