Maximilian Kuhn investigates one of the most pressing, yet neglected subjects in the field of global energy politics: the integration of the Iranian gas market. Possessing the world’s second-largest proven natural gas reserves, Iran is a hypothetical energy giant-in-waiting. Yet over three decades of internal divisions, coupled with crippling international sanctions, have left Iran unable to capitalize on its vast energy potential. Increasing global demand for natural gas and a government in constant need of finding new sources of revenue to meet the needs of a fast-growing population should lead Iran to eventually become a large-scale gas exporter. How this could take place and what the implications for global gas markets would be are the central research questions tackled by this study. The study allows a look beyond international politics, Iranian political decision-making, investment laws, and pipeline games.

This thesis investigates the Islamic Republic of Iran's current natural gas sector and explores the opportunities to monetize its proved natural gas reserves. According to BP statistics, Iran owns the world's second-largest proved natural gas reserves, totaling 33.2 trillion cubic meters, or 17.2% of the world's total proved reserves. Iran's ability to expand its role in the natural gas market depends heavily on its ability to increase production, its capability to reach markets, and improved international relations with the West. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) afforded sanctions relief for Iran to develop and resurrect its battered energy infrastructure with foreign investments. Though the United States withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, Iran is expected to increase its natural gas production to at least satisfy growing domestic demands. After analyzing Iran's natural gas capacity, susceptible markets, and infrastructure, this research explores three strategic political scenarios that explore how the United States could approach Iran's natural gas sector: cooperation, confrontation, and a hybrid approach. Iran desires to become a regional energy hub for exports, and U.S. policymakers must pursue a strategy that preserves U.S. interests while also promoting energy security for its allies and partners. The Middle East is one of the wealthiest regions of the world in terms of natural resources, and the potential for Iran to emerge as a major natural gas supplier will inevitably affect geopolitics as natural gas becomes more important for those seeking supplies. The Middle East possesses 41% of the world's natural gas supply

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book examines how China can increase the share of natural gas in its energy system. China’s energy strategy has global ramifications and impact, and central to this strategy is the country’s transition from coal to gas. The book presents the culmination of a two-year collaboration between the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC) and Shell. With the Chinese government’s strategic aim to increase the share of gas in the energy mix from 5.8% in 2014 to 10% and 15% in 2020 and 2030 respectively, the book outlines how China can achieve its gas targets. Providing both quantifiable metrics and policy measures for the transition, it is a much needed addition to the literature on Chinese energy policy. The research and the resulting recommendations of this study have fed directly into the Chinese government’s 13th Five-Year Plan, and provide unique insights into the Chinese government and policy-making. Due to its global impact, the book is a valuable resource for policy makers in both China and the rest of the world.

The Gas Troika on the European Gas Market assesses the energy policy of the Gas Troika Organization (GTO) as an entity and its members, Russia, Iran and Qatar, operating in the European gas market (EGM) between 2008 and 2015. The book focuses on their interests, policies and frameworks, and the enabling and constraining factors they encounter in the European market. The energy policies of the GTO members are discussed in the context of extraction and distribution of natural gas, its export to the European countries and the environmental side-effects of these contracts. The important questions examined in this pioneering study are: How do the GTO members develop their interests and energy policies in the European environment? How do the common interests and policies of the GTO members explain the framework of the organization in the EGM? How is this organization perceived and assessed as a semi-coherent regional entity? The book applies a social structuration theoretical framework with respect to geographical resources, economy, international relations and environmental dimensions to provide a multi-disciplinary assessment. Researchers in energy economics and political sciences, as well as energy analysts and consultants will find this book to be extremely beneficial.
