They have entered parliaments across Europe and some parties are even participating in national governments. What is remarkable is that right-wing and national populist parties have changed their mobilisation tactics. While predominantly xenophobic in the past, right-wing populists now mobilise against further European integration and not without success. For all actors involved in EU politics, these developments should be taken seriously. As political think tanks either directly involved in EU politics or deeply committed to the idea of European integration, The Centre for European Studies (CES) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) analyse the reasons behind the advance of Europe's right Ðwing populist parties. While demagoguery is traditionally regarded as destabilizing and dangerous, this book shows how it can also be used to advance the common good. Most of us think that demagoguery is, by definition, bad. Relatedly, scholars almost invariably treat demagoguery as a divisive practice that appeals to what is worst in an audience at the expense of what is best for the public good. In Demagogues in American Politics, Charles U. Zug offers a historical analysis of the role of demagoguery in the American political system. Challenging the conventional wisdom, he argues that demagoguery is not an inherently bad form of leadership. Whereas classical thinkers had believed that demagoguery was always a threat to political order, the most sophisticated founders of the American Constitution-inspired by Enlightenment political philosophy-recognized that demagoguery, though dangerous, could be recruited by the Constitution to improve the political system. Aristophanes and the Generation of Greek Comedy challenges the ways in which both ancient and modern scholarship have created the figure we know as Aristophanes and it builds on Telo's the long-term project to study the genres of ancient Greek literature (particularly plays) as well as genre theory more generally.Telo asks, how did the image we know of Aristophanes arose? Aristophanes' supremacy is traced, by Telo, back to the playwright himself. Early scholars presented Aristophanes' work as a prestigious object, an expression of supposedly transhistorical values of dignity (semnotes) and self-control (sophrosune). This construction of the merits of Aristophanic comedy over that of other varieties depends on its textual connections with other works, particularly tragedies. Telo shows, through close readings of Wasps and Clouds, for example, how the Aristophanic style is actually figured in the plays as the tactile experience of a garment, a soft, protective cloak intended to shield an audience from the debilitating effects of competitors' comedies during the Dionysia. Aristophanes' narratives of sons and fathers, poet and audience, is thus at the center of the discourse that has shaped his canonical dominance ever since.
