Excerpt from Exposure of Puseyism and High-Churchism, by a Minister of the Church of England, or Danger and Duty We talk of popish cruelties, as perpetrated by bloody Queen Mary and her mitred prompters, and well we may. But England has beheld princes, bishops, and judges, high lords, and great captains treading in the same steps, as far as times and circum stances would allow; men. Who, while professing themselves Protestants as to their creed, were l'apists as to their practice. And these are the very men and measures now publicly lauded by the Puseyites, and longed after by many a High-churchmen. 0h. England, England! Should it please God to visit thee' for thine iniquities, and to permit Puseyism and High-church principles to gain that ascendancy they are stri' fine; so hard to gain, and towards which they are making such rapid strides, then will our prison valls again send forth the echo of groans and lamentations from men, women, and children, and fines, and banishment, and death will again proclaim what Popery is in its essence under every name and modification; and our land will again become a land of darkness and irreligion, of the ignorant and profane, even as it has been in times past. It cannot be otherwise, for the pure and undefiled religion of the Gospel of Christ and that of Puseyism and High-church are irreconcilable. They cannot reigm and rule in the same place and time. Long have we as a nation mocked God with a form of religion, while destitute and hating the power of it. Hit! It may be that the Lord will scourge us back to himself by the rod of his just anger in the shape of popish Puseyistic persecution. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... IttsiitoirriL f f TTOW shall man be just with God?" is a question of infinite importance -IX to every child of Adam; a question, however, which could never have been answered if Jehovah had not manifested his sovereign grace towards his apostate creatures. Fur from being a merely speculative point, it permeates the whole system of Christianity, and lies at the foundation of personal religion, and of all right views of the character and moral government of God. Whatever else may be considered indifferent or non-essential this cannot be; it is a capital article of that faith which was once for all delivered to the saints, and a mistake here may prove eternally fatal. Well might Luther call it "the article of a standing or falling church," i.e., the article on the reception or rejection of which the stability or subversion of the church depended. This then is the subject to which we invite the attention of our readers in this paper. And first, as to the nature of justification, or that in which it consists. The term justification is forensic, referring to the proceedings in a court of judicature, and signifies the declaring a person righteous according to law. It is not the making n person righteous by the infusion of holy habits, or by an inherent change from sin to holiness, this is sanctification; but the act of a judge pronouncing the party acquitted from all judicial charges. This is the sense in which the words just a.nd justify are used in the Old and New Testament Scriptures. For example it is said, "If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked." (Deut. xxv. 1.) Here it is evident that to justify the righteous, ...
