Extra learning opportunities (ELOs) help to ensure that children are successful in school and in life. Although before- and after-school programs have been around for decades, much is being learned about how the hours outside of school can be critical determinants of student achievement. With many forms and purposes, extra learning opportunities are a key part of many state policy efforts to support the long-term success of children, families, and communities. State policymakers increasingly recognize the important contributions that high-quality extra learning opportunities can make toward education, youth development, workforce, and prevention priorities. Extra learning opportunities help to keep youth engaged in their schools and communities from an early age. They provide safe havens, promote positive development, and offer additional academic assistance and enrichment to students who require it. ELOs can play a crucial role in state policy efforts to improve schools, help youth develop essential workforce skills, and support families and communities. For example, high-quality ELOs can be an important strategy to close the achievement gap in reading and math. Research also points to the impact of ELOs on outcomes that indirectly affect school achievement: positive social behaviors and attitudes, improved engagement in learning, and development of skills such as problem solving or higher-order thinking. Higher Education Meritocracy And Inequality In China written by Ye Liu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-08 with Education categories.

This book investigates the changing opportunities in higher education for different social groups during China’s transition from the socialist regime to a market economy. The first part of the book provides a historical and comparative analysis of the development of the idea of meritocracy, since its early origins in China, and in more recent western thought. The second part then explores higher education reforms in China, the part played by supposedly meritocratic forms of selection, and the implications of these for social mobility. Based on original empirical data, Ye Liu sheds light on the socio-economic, gender and geographical inequalities behind the meritocratic façade of the Gaokao (高考). Liu argues that the Chinese philosophical belief in education-based meritocracy had a modern makeover in the Gaokao, and that this ideology induces working-class and rural students to believe in upward social mobility through higher education. When the Gaokao broke the promise of status improvement for rural students, they turned to the Chinese Communist Party and sought political connections by actively applying for its membership. This book reveals a bleak picture of visible and invisible inequality in terms of access to and participation in higher education in contemporary China. Written in an accessible style, it offers a valuable resource for researchers and non-specialist readers alike.

The decision to go to college is a big one. It signifies a transition into young adulthood and the increasing expectations for independence that can feel exciting, liberating, and daunting! For students with disabilities this transition may be even more challenging. Despite the challenges, more and more students with disabilities are attending postsecondary colleges and universities. While this is certainly encouraging, students with disabilities are less likely to successfully complete their postsecondary programs when compared with their general population peers. So, what do we do? We can learn from our successes during early education and from successful postsecondary programs, taking what we have learned and bring these lessons to scale so that fully inclusive postsecondary programs are available for all students with special education needs. This book was originally published as a special issue of European Journal of Special Needs Education.

'Special needs' encompasses a very broad spectrum of difficultiesin the primary classroom, from lower than expected achievements to clinically identified disabilities. We all find some aspects of learning harder than others, However,it is universally true that some approaches to learning suit each of us better than others. Some teaching helps us to make sense of confusing concepts, other approaches just 'muddy the waters'. When learning is particularly hard work anyway, having a variety of approaches available is key to unlocking understanding and encouraging children to stay on task. This visually appealing series of three books (for children at NC Level 1/Scottish Level A aged 5-7; NC Level 2/Scottish Level B aged 7-9; NC Level 3/Scottish Level B-C aged 9-11) will suggest a wide range of kinaesthetic and visual resources and activities through which teachers and learning support assistants in the classroom, or parents at home, can offer alternative learning experiences when more worksheets are clearly not a solution. The books will be full of colourful photographs of things to make and do with the children, to grab their attention and give them ownership of their work. Showing objects and games made by a teacher and children should show that these ideas are well within the grasp of and parent or teacher. Throughout the books, the activities are linked to simple explanaations of the relevant maths and the difficulties commonly associated with acquiring an understanding of it; for example, counting to 10 in the Level 1 book and developing addition strategies in the NC Level 2 book. This series addresses the market opportunity for a 'dip in' resource, that offers a range of alternatives to yet more worksheets activities and counting plastic cubes.
