One of the most neglected portions of prophetic scripture is the temple vision recorded in the final chapters of the book of Ezekiel. But this vision is one that the church can no longer afford to ignore. It contains essential information for the end-time church because it is a depiction of that church and what it is to become under the final outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The temple vision of Ezekiel 40 to 48 was given to the prophet during a time of national crisis and calamity. Through apostasy Israel had forfeited the protection of God. The flower of the nation, its most promising youth, its leading men and women, were captives in Babylon. Solomon's temple was destroyed, Jerusalem lay in ruins and Judah was a desolate wilderness. Finally the land rested and enjoyed the Sabbaticals that had been denied it during the rebellion of Israel. But even while God's people were suffering the censure of God's displeasure the vision of Ezekiel pointed them forward to a complete reversal of fortunes and renewal of the divine favor. The vision reassured the repentant of the return of the presence and favor of God, pointing both them and us to the long awaited latter rain of the Holy Spirit. The prophet Ezekiel was shown a new, restored temple filled with the glory of God and Israel once again dwelling in peace and safety in their allotted inheritance at the final restoration of all things, the great and final Jubilee. The prophet Isaiah identifies this final Jubilee as the "acceptable year of the Lord"; the year of full and complete liberty from sin under the power of the Holy Spirit. But Isaiah also calls it the "day of vengeance of our God". Isaiah 61:1-2. Likewise, the temple vision, while it comforts us with the assurance of God's presence, warns of the consequences of being unprepared for God's next great move - the outpouring of the latter rain that ripens the gospel harvest. Fourteen years before this vision was given to Ezekiel he was shown in a similar vision the glory of the Lord departing the first temple shortly before it was destroyed by the Babylonians. Ezekiel 9 to 11. In this vision the glory of God reluctantly, agonizingly withdrew from the doomed city, resting briefly on the Mount of Olives. Ezekiel 11:22 and 23. Six hundred years later, Christ at his triumphal entry into Jerusalem would halt the colt that carried him at the same place on the mount and once again weep over the impenitence of the doomed city. In the temple vision the same glory that left the temple in Ezekiel 11 returns and fills the new temple. (See Ezekiel 43:1-12 and 40:1.) But before this occurs the vision describes an atonement and cleansing of the temple similar to the work of Christ in the second cleansing of the temple just before his death. Ezekiel 45:18-20, 43:1-12. This cleansing and atonement represents the essential work required before the return of the Presence. That Ezekiel's temple typifies the empowered, end-time church is shown in many ways throughout the vision. For example, the articles that are measured and cleansed in this temple are the same articles measured in the Revelation given the Apostle John - the temple, the altar and the inner court along with those worshiping there. Revelation 11:1, 2. And, the commission of John to measure the temple is the same directive given to Ezekiel. Both Ezekiel's and John's commissions symbolize the judgment or measurement of the end-time church and confirm the testimony of the Apostle Peter that judgment begins at the house of God. I Peter 4:17 and Ezekiel 9:6. How is the judgment of Israel accomplished? Scripture indicates it is through the enlightenment of heaven's final gift, the heavy latter rain.

EZEKIEL'S TEMPLE A Scriptural Framework Illustrating THE Covenant of Grace Bible readers have long pondered the complicated Temple vision in Ezekiel's last nine chapters. In an attempt to explain why this vision is in the Bible, this study focuses especially on what the prophet was explicitly told to show Israel-the Temple's "design," "plan," or "layout," and in particular its "exits and entrances" (Ezek. 43:11). In these pages, a practicing professional architect who has pondered the Temple for some five decades shows how Ezekiel's mysterious "plan," with its complex system of "exits and entrances," presents in symbolic forms a stunning visual portrait of God's eternal Covenant with Israel and-through that-the work of Messiah. Emil Heller Henning III was born in Boston in 1946, educated in the Baltimore Public Schools, and holds A.B. and Master of Architecture degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He worked one summer in graduate school for a Boston firm that pioneered "wayfinding" concepts to help people navigate subway systems and sprawling building complexes. While there he assisted in the design of orientation maps and signs for a campus of over 100 interconnected buildings. For three years he was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, after which he worked for architecture firms in North and South Carolina. He is today a Registered Architect in South Carolina, where he has a small architectural practice and serves as a Ruling Elder at Second Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Greenville, S.C.

In Visualizing the Vision, the author presents a detailed analysis of Ezekiel’s temple vision from an architectural, linguistic, and historical approach. The study demonstrates that the vision was not meant as a building instruction, but as a sign of hope for the exiles in Babylon, showing the temple as it will be built in a distant future, when it will never again be defiled and the Glory of the Lord will return to His house forever. The author takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the description of the vision’s temple and provides architectural drawings of its possible construction, situating these within the larger framework of Ancient Near Eastern building styles.

In this short book I explain the building of all the Temples from the Tent of Meeting to us as the Temple of God. Also in this book I explain the divisive teaching of the Jews about the building of the Third Temple. The Messiah was born in Bethlehem and then God said in His Word, “My Son will be called out of Egypt” (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1-6; Luke 2:1-20; Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15). This of course was the case with Jesus and His earthly parents after they escaped to Egypt and then returned years later. All the promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled regarding the Messiah’s coming. It was through Christ who had become the High Priest of good things, a greater and more perfect tabernacle that we have a new and living way to God (Hebrews 8:1-13; 9:11-22; 10:4-24; Matthew 26:17-29; Luke 22:7-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Ephesians 1:7).

Ezekiel’s Temple liturgy, Ezekiel 40–48, is God’s revelation. Its use is future, when Messiah is king on David’s throne. Mystery surrounds it—no high priest, altered festivals, changes to Mosaic Law, and a return to animal sacrifice? Solving the mystery, this book shakes up our theology! This book first demonstrates the future necessity for Ezekiel’s Temple and liturgy. Then we analyze the details of each component in the Tabernacle and Ezekiel’s Temple. Details include priesthood, consecrations, Tabernacle articles, sacrifices, and festivals. It is boring, but this foundation must be laid. It allows us to identify similarities and differences. Similarities indicate continuation of Tabernacle ritual. Differences indicate changes for a new era. Sacrifices that cease are of special interest. These spotlight what Mosaic shadows have found their reality. This defines what Messiah has done as God’s suffering servant. Christ’s death made atonement for sin and therefore the Day of Atonement festival ceases. As the mystery of Ezekiel’s Temple unfolds, we make sense of God’s revelation to Ezekiel. But in doing so, it radically alters our theology. Current thinking is that the cross fulfils all functions of the court altar. But if that were true, there would be no court altar sacrifices in the future! In Ezekiel, the evening burnt offering stops, and all other sacrifices continue! The cross only fulfills one of the functions of the altar outside the camp. Theological adjustment is needed on the cross and atonement to understand Messiah’s resumption of Tabernacle ways. For Roman Catholics, Tabernacle typology proves no one eats the sacrifice where blood enters the Tabernacle. Jews hold to the eternality of God’s Word, but they cannot hold to the shadows and miss the reality. Ezekiel’s ritual changes Mosaic Law. It also forces them to find God’s suffering servant during the existence of the second temple!

Ezekiel's Visionary Temple in Babylonian Context examines evidence from Babylonian sources to better understand Ezekiel's vision of the future temple as it appears in chapters 40–48. Tova Ganzel argues that Neo-Babylonian temples provide a meaningful backdrop against which many unique features of Ezekiel's vision can and should be interpreted. In pointing to the similarities between Neo-Babylonian temples and the description in the book of Ezekiel, Ganzel demonstrates how these temples served as a context for the prophet's visions and describes the extent to which these similarities provide a further basis for broader research of the connections between Babylonia and the Bible. Ultimately, she argues the extent to which the book of Ezekiel models its temple on those of the Babylonians. Thus, this book suggests a comprehensive picture of the book of Ezekiel’s worldview and to contextualize its visionary temple by comparing its vision to the actual temples surrounding the Judeans in exile.
