Este livro reúne 75 das principais fábulas de Esopo — figura mítica ou histórica que teria vivido entre os séculos VII e VI a.C. —, acompanhadas do texto grego estabelecido por Émile Chambry. Separadas em dois grupos, “com animais” e “sem animais”, as fábulas foram cuidadosamente traduzidas por André Malta, da Universidade de São Paulo, como se fossem pequenos poemas em prosa, procurando fidelidade aos ritmos e à concisão do original. O tradutor também assina uma apresentação em que discute a dimensão histórica e a estrutura das fábulas de Esopo, e como elas se destinavam não às crianças, mas à reflexão e ao deleite dos adultos. A segunda parte do volume traz a primeira tradução direta para o português do chamado Romance de Esopo (ou Vida de Esopo), a célebre biografia ficcional do fabulista, de autoria anônima, escrita por volta do século II d.C. A tradução foi realizada por Adriane da Silva Duarte, da USP, a partir da versão mais completa do texto grego, descoberta somente no século XX (a “recensão G”). Mesmo sendo uma verdadeira colagem de escritos realizados ao longo de séculos, como comenta a tradutora em sua apresentação, o Romance de Esopo diverte por sua picardia e ilumina aspectos-chave do meio em que circulavam as histórias esópicas na Antiguidade.

Toutes les littératures connaissent le genre narratif bref, lui donnent des qualifications comme: 'nouvelle', 'novella', 'fable', 'fabliau', 'dit', 'conte', 'cuento', etc. Les variations terminologiques multiples trahissent cependant l'incertitude des auteurs et de leurs destinataires devant ce modus dicendi particulier. Car qu'est-ce que c'est qu'un récit bref? Est-ce simplement un récit de moins de 100 pages comme le prétendent certains érudits contemporains ou faut-il supposer l'existence d'autres critères sur la base desquels on pourrait arriver à une différenciation vraiment fonctionnelle? Dans la pratique toute tentative de catégorisation des nombreuses manifestations du genre narratif bref est restée vaine. Le paradoxe est cependant que ce mode littéraire populaire, qu'on ne réussira probablement jamais à circonscrire de façon adéquate, semble se conformer à un certain horizon d'attente et se distinguer de l'écriture épique ou romanesque. Le recueil d'études que voici fait l'histoire de ce modus dicendi fascinant dans les littératures de l'Espagne, de l'Italie et de la France (et des régions francophones) et cela depuis le Moyen Age jusqu'à nos jours. Les différentes contributions donnent des analyses approfondies des aspects traditionnels et novateurs ayant accompagné la naissance et l'évolution de ce genre particulier. L'approche plurilinguistique ne permet non seulement l'étude de l'évolution de ce genre bref dans les trois aires culturelles en question, mais ouvre également la voie aux analyses comparatistes.

Examining the figure of Aesop and the traditions surrounding him, Aesopic Conversations offers a portrait of what Greek popular culture might have looked like in the ancient world. What has survived from the literary record of antiquity is almost entirely the product of an elite of birth, wealth, and education, limiting our access to a fuller range of voices from the ancient past. This book, however, explores the anonymous Life of Aesop and offers a different set of perspectives. Leslie Kurke argues that the traditions surrounding this strange text, when read with and against the works of Greek high culture, allow us to reconstruct an ongoing conversation of "great" and "little" traditions spanning centuries. Evidence going back to the fifth century BCE suggests that Aesop participated in the practices of nonphilosophical wisdom (sophia) while challenging it from below, and Kurke traces Aesop's double relation to this wisdom tradition. She also looks at the hidden influence of Aesop in early Greek mimetic or narrative prose writings, focusing particularly on the Socratic dialogues of Plato and the Histories of Herodotus. Challenging conventional accounts of the invention of Greek prose and recognizing the problematic sociopolitics of humble prose fable, Kurke provides a new approach to the beginnings of prose narrative and what would ultimately become the novel. Delving into Aesop, his adventures, and his crafting of fables, Aesopic Conversations shows how this low, noncanonical figure was--unexpectedly--central to the construction of ancient Greek literature.
