"Dostoevsky is the unrivaled and perspicacious seer of the human mind and heart; he emerges as a great friend and teacher of humanity. He has dearly read the signs of our times, for he lived through the agonizing doubts and despairs of our present spiritual crisis. His sincerity, his spiritual heroism, and his moral courage have never been questioned. " With these words, the author of the present work, Miriam T. Šajković, begins her initial attempt to acquaint American readers with Dostoevsky's philosophy of education. The views of Dostoevsky on educational problems in his own time have been historically explored by Šajković in relation to nineteenth-century Russia and the events which shaped its attitudes and customs. The author has studied the central aspects of Dostoevsky's system in order to extract from them a contribution toward the formulation of a philosophy of education suitable for the present time. Šajković proposes that a new synthesis of Dostoevsky's thought and contemporary American pedagogy be effected for the purpose of reinstating serious reflection upon modern morals and religion. The book contains an annotated bibliography, conveniently divided into sections according to various high school reading levels; selections from his letters, arranged under topic headings; a chronological table of his works; and a master bibliography of primary and secondary sources. A unique and valuable contribution to both philosophy of education and Dostoevsky commentary, Dostoevsky: His Image of Man will be of lasting worth to professional educators in particular, as well as students of literature in general.

Notes from Underground, also translated in English as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld while Notes from Underground is the most literal translation) (1864) is a short novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It is considered by many to be the world's first existentialist novel. This study concentrates on The Devils, but also places this novel in the total context of Dostoevsky’s work. Also considered is the life and work of T.N. Granovsky, who is satirised along with Turgenev in the novel, and thus offers a useful basis on which to delineate the contours of Dostoevsky’s thought. First published in 1991, the book begins from the belief that his "genius embodies much of what is typical of Russian life: his boundless vitality, his extremism, his lack of empiricism and economy. To understand Dostoevsky is therefore somehow to understand Russia." The author concludes that Dostoevsky badly misunderstood Western liberalism, but grappled very well with the psychology of the radical terrorist. This is explained with reference to his intellectual revolution, which is seen as consisting of six stages from his early works of the 1840s.

More than a century after his death in 1881, Fyodor Dostoevsky continues to fascinate readers and reviewers. Countless studies of his writing have been published—more than a dozen in the past few years alone. In this important new work, Thomas Marullo provides a diary-portrait of Dostoevsky's early years drawn from the letters, memoirs, and criticism of the writer, as well as from the testimony and witness of family and friends, readers and reviewers, and observers and participants in his life. Marullo's exhaustive search of published materials on Dostoevsky sheds light on many unexplored corners of Dostoevsky's childhood, adolescence, and youth. Speakers of excerpts are given maximum freedom: Anything they said about the writer—the good and the bad, the truth and the lies—are included, with extensive footnotes providing correctives, counter-arguments, and other pertinent information. The first part of this volume, "All in the Family," focuses on Dostoevsky's early formation and schooling, i.e., his time in city and country, and his ties to his family, particularly his parents. The second section, "To Petersburg!," features Dostoevsky's early days in Russia's imperial city, his years at the Main Engineering Academy, and the death of his father. The third part, "Darkness before Dawn," deals with the writer's youthful struggles and strivings, culminating in the success of his work, Poor Folk. This clear and comprehensive portrait of one of the world's greatest writers will appeal to students, teachers, and scholars of Dostoevsky's early life, as well as general readers interested in Dostoevsky, literature, and history.
