Når et par får deres første barn, er der meget, der ændrer sig, både praktisk, personligt og i parforholdet. Else Christensens bog "Første barn" fra 1980 undersøger, hvad der sker i en ung familie i tiden op til og efter, man får det første barn. Den meget omfattende undersøgelse, der ligger til grund for bogen, er foretaget i perioden fra 1974 til 1979 og er en spændende mulighed for at sammenligne synet på parforhold, forældreskab og kønsidentitet i slutningen af 1970’erne med det, vi ser i dag. Undersøgelsen er foretaget for Sexologisk Afsnit, Psykiatrisk Poliklinik, Rigshospitalet. Else Christensen er en dansk rødstrømpe og psykolog, der er kendt for sit store arbejde med voldsramte familier. Hun var en af de første danske forskere, der satte fokus på alkoholmisbrug og vold i hjemmet og de konsekvenser, det har for børnene. I 1979 var Else Christensen en af hovedkræfterne bag oprettelsen af et af Danmarks første krisecentre, Dannerhuset. Fra 1981-1990 arbejde Else Christensen i Dannerhusets krisecenter. De to første år lønnet af midler fra Socialstyrelsen, de senere år for midler fra forskellige fonde og de sidste to år for fondsmidler til en professionel børnerådgivning. I 1990 blev Else Christensen ansat ved SFI-Socialforskningsinstituttet (nu VIVE), hvor hun frem til 2015 gennemførte en lang række undersøgelser om udsatte børn henholdsvis i Grønland og Danmark.
