The application of fractals and fractal geometry in soil science has become increasingly important over the last few years. This self-contained and timely book was designed to provide detailed and comprehensive information on the current status of the application of fractal geometry in soil science, and on prospects for its future use. With a detailed and specific introductory chapter, particular attention is paid to comparing and contrasting "fractal" and "fragmentation" concepts. Some uses of fractals, such as to quantify the retention and transport properties of soils, to describe the intricate geometry of pore surfaces and macropore networks, or to elucidate the rooting patterns of various plants, are discussed. Applications of fractals in soil science are both relatively recent and in constant evolution. Estos cap�tulos se han originado a partir del material que ha servido durante muchos a�os para impartir una asignatura de "Teor�a de Grupos y Simetr�a" en los Planes de Estudio de las extintas Licenciatura en Ciencias Qu�micas o Licenciatura en Qu�mica. El soporte te�rico que esta asignatura proporciona no s�lo a los estudiantes de Qu�mica F�sica sino tambi�n de Qu�mica Org�nica y Qu�mica Inorg�nica permite una mucho mayor capacidad de asimilaci�n de nuevos conocimientos gracias a esa Ley universal de la Naturaleza que establece que s�lo se aprende en funci�n de lo que ya se sabe, o al menos se aprende m�s f�cil, r�pida y estructuradamente. De ah� la importancia de explicar a los alumnos materias de tipo b�sico sobre las que fundamentar las posteriores aplicaciones.. La inversi�n de materia gris que supone el estudio de esta asignatura es una de las m�s rentables intelectualmente y se ve m�s que ampliamente recompensada cuando se consiguen entender, desde el punto de vista de la simetr�a, los fundamentos de resultados ampliamente utilizados dogm�ticamente �Qu� decir por ejemplo de las Reglas de Selecci�n en general! Un precursor de este manual se public� en forma de apuntes editados a ciclostil en la Universidad de Granada en 1978 destinado a los alumnos de 4� curso de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Qu�mica, especialidades de Qu�mica F�sica y Qu�mica Inorg�nica. La estructura del manual se corresponde con el orden en que esta asignatura se ha impartido desde entonces a los estudiantes de Qu�mica F�sica. Primero un poco de descriptiva de los elementos de simetr�a y de las operaciones puntuales de simetr�a, para seguir con un poco de la teor�a de grupos abstractos y de la teor�a de representaciones. En esta primera parte ha resultado extraordinariamente provechoso recuperar y utilizar los primeros conceptos de simetr�a ya explicados en la asignatura de Cristalograf�a y Mineralog�a, milagrosamente salvada en el actual primer curso de carrera al menos en la Universidad de M�laga.La extensi�n dedicada a la Teor�a de las representaciones de grupos es un poco m�s extensa de lo habitual precisamente para fundamentar las aplicaciones, que se centran en los aspectos m�s b�sicos de Espectroscop�a y Teor�a de Enlaces, incluyendo una m�nima introducci�n a la Teor�a de los Complejos de Coordinaci�n. Deliberadamente se han dejado fuera muchos aspectos, y los que se han tratado se han presentado s�lo muy escuetamente, ya que m�s que hacer una presentaci�n exhaustiva de las aplicaciones, de lo que se trata es de explicar fundamentos que permitan al estudiante una posterior ampliaci�n de sus conocimientos. En resumen, s�lo se ha tratado de proporcionar unas cuantas claves. Para un estudio m�s profundo, los cl�sicos libros de Wigner, Weyl, etc., mencionados a lo largo del texto, siguen siendo insustituibles.
