NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From one of the world’s leading physicists and author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Elegant Universe, comes “an astonishing ride” through the universe (The New York Times) that makes us look at reality in a completely different way. Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past? Greene has set himself a daunting task: to explain non-intuitive, mathematical concepts like String Theory, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and Inflationary Cosmology with analogies drawn from common experience. From Newton’s unchanging realm in which space and time are absolute, to Einstein’s fluid conception of spacetime, to quantum mechanics’ entangled arena where vastly distant objects can instantaneously coordinate their behavior, Greene takes us all, regardless of our scientific backgrounds, on an irresistible and revelatory journey to the new layers of reality that modern physics has discovered lying just beneath the surface of our everyday world.

A study of water at the intersection of landscape and infrastructure in Paris, Berlin, Lagos, Mumbai, Los Angeles, and London. Water lies at the intersection of landscape and infrastructure, crossing between visible and invisible domains of urban space, in the tanks and buckets of the global South and the vast subterranean technological networks of the global North. In this book, Matthew Gandy considers the cultural and material significance of water through the experiences of six cities: Paris, Berlin, Lagos, Mumbai, Los Angeles, and London. Tracing the evolving relationships among modernity, nature, and the urban imagination, from different vantage points and through different periods, Gandy uses water as a lens through which to observe both the ambiguities and the limits of nature as conventionally understood. Gandy begins with the Parisian sewers of the nineteenth century, captured in the photographs of Nadar, and the reconstruction of subterranean Paris. He moves on to Weimar-era Berlin and its protection of public access to lakes for swimming, the culmination of efforts to reconnect the city with nature. He considers the threat of malaria in Lagos, where changing geopolitical circumstances led to large-scale swamp drainage in the 1940s. He shows how the dysfunctional water infrastructure of Mumbai offers a vivid expression of persistent social inequality in a postcolonial city. He explores the incongruous concrete landscapes of the Los Angeles River. Finally, Gandy uses the fictional scenario of a partially submerged London as the starting point for an investigation of the actual hydrological threats facing that city.

The Thin Tear In The Fabric Of Space written by Douglas Trevor and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-01 with Fiction categories.

The Thin Tear in the Fabric of Space gathers stories about coping with grief, trying to love people who have died, and—more broadly—leaving old versions of the self behind, sometimes by choice and sometimes out of necessity. In each of the nine stories, Douglas Trevor’s characters are forced to face uncomfortable realities. For Elena Gavrushnekov in the title story, that means admitting after the death of her beloved that she still longs for contact with other human bodies. For Peter in “Central Square,” it is realizing that, like his deceased father before him, he is drinking himself to death. Unable to confront his incapacitated mother and the memory of the plane crash that killed his father, Edwin Morris in “Saint Francis in Flint” is compelled to acknowledge that his saintly aspirations are not what they appear to be, while Sharon Mackaney in “The Surprising Weight of the Body's Organs” struggles with uncontrollable outbursts of rage in the wake of her young son’s death. In moments of great pain and loss, when self-expression seems impossible and terribly useless, the characters in these stories nonetheless discover the tenderness of others. In “The River,” the narrator finds that the friendship he has forged with a French girl with whom he can only just communicate has bred intense, almost intuitive compassion, while in “Fellowship of the Bereaved,” the disconsolate brother of the deceased sister who occupies the empty center of the story uncovers not only anger in his parents but also empathy and humor. As these characters persevere in their own lives, they do so mindful of, and humanized by, the experiences of having seen people they know and love slip unexpectedly into the thin tear in the fabric of space: that quiet chasm that so resolutely separates the living from the dead.

The Fabric Of Space Gravity written by Rodney Kawecki and has been published by America Star Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06 with Science categories.

The Fabric of Space Gravity explains the pros and cons about the interstellar space field and possibilities of space travel that includes speculation about time travel and how wormholes and time machines' may not at all be a resolution for traveling astronomical distances in space in the future. Rodney Kawecki adventures introducing what he calls "Instantaneous Space Travel" as the fastest a ship can travel through the cosmos without becoming pressed to traveling backwards or forwards in time. He believes that time travel may not be an adequate explanation to shorten the great distances one faces traveling between galaxy's and star systems. He explains how instantaneous space travel relative to the zero gravity fabric of space may not at all retain the element of gravity that calls to having to travel in the fourth dimension. In the blink of an eye may be the only remedy traveling from point "a" to point "b" putting all speculations of space travel in an equation for space travel that allows only the intermediate means for maximum velocity based on the capacity of a ship's engine propulsion value. With a zero point gravity space field bending space or creating wormholes may not at all be the only possible means to travel the distance in space. Space curvature and bending space may not have a place in future technology based on the fact that the space fabric withstands the greatest degree of propulsion and pressure put in its grid in the beginning made in a surviving universe we live in being created from the greatest explosion event of all ' The Big Bang." Bending and manipulating the space grid made from such a powerful event seems useless to venture through time trying to duplicate only a small part of the cosmos for time travel. The irony of changing our universe from what it was made from seems too great a task the possibility too great.

"An overwhelming condition took hold of me. I felt as though I was rotating clockwise from a bird's eye view and at the same time experienced a gentle purr which was accompanied by a strong tingling sensation that engulfed my whole body and was causing me to be less in control of my physical senses." Through first hand experience, the author explains how he came to uncover the intricacies of a subtle and parallel field on which he stumbled and with which he interacted over the years; a field that forms part of us and of everything that exists. He also provides simple methods for the reader on how to get in touch with and feel such a field. In his efforts to authenticate its presence the author was able to connect the field to prevailing scientific theory. A phenomenon that provides the background or the space fabric on which string theorists base their findings. With such fundamental features, the field's impact on health, religious experience and human perception are also discussed with insight into the author's lifetime conclusions.
