Multiple sclerosis is the commonest chronic nerve disorder that occurs in young adults. It is characterised by progressive disability. The features of the disease include weakness, sensory disturbance, pain, and impairment of balance. Paul's book tells the story of the impact of the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis on a young fit man. It chronicles his determination to realise his potential in life by utilising his personal strengths and drawing on the ethos of 'smiling through adversity' that was instilled during his training as a Royal Marines Commando. I hope that his book will serve as an inspiration to all, but in particular to those who are challenged by multiple sclerosis or other chronic disease in early adult life. Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Garry Wotherspoon’s Gay Sydney: A History is an updated version of his 1991 classic, City of the Plain: History of a Gay Sub-culture, written in the midst of the AIDS crisis. In this vivid book Wotherspoon traces the shifts that have occurred since then, including majority support for marriage equality and anti-discrimination legislation. He also ponders the parallel evaporation of a distinctly gay sensibility and the disappearance of once-packed gay bars that have now become cafes and gyms. This book also tells the story of gay Sydney across a century, looking at secret, underground gay life, the never-ending debates about sex in society and the role of social movements in the ’60 and ’70s in effecting social change.

Dr. Tuthill began writing her exquisite travel stories in honor of her best friend, the astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who tragically perished in the crash of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003. Tuthill's first collection of stories, "Letters from Africa," lovingly chronicles thrilling safari trips taken throughout southern Africa over the past five years. This new collection of stories represents an eclectic mix of letters written for Kalpana's sisters in India, detailing Tuthill's other fascinating travel experiences. The stories range from scuba diving with manta rays to searching for exotic birds, from a frigid night spent in the Ice Hotel in Sweden to raising funds for breast cancer research with a grueling 60-mile walk. Throughout these stories we experience Tuthill's passion for life and adventure, for animals and wild places, and her concern for conducting a life as ecologically sensitive as possible. The colors, the sounds, and the scents are so realistically portrayed that it feels as if you are there with Tuthill throughout her travels, culminating in a captivating and poignant trip to visit Kalpana's sisters in India, commemorating the 5th anniversary of the shuttle disaster.

Power Moves written by Kyle Shelton and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-10 with History categories.

Since World War II, Houston has become a burgeoning, internationally connected metropolis—and a sprawling, car-dependent city. In 1950, it possessed only one highway, the Gulf Freeway, which ran between Houston and Galveston. Today, Houston and Harris County have more than 1,200 miles of highways, and a third major loop is under construction nearly thirty miles out from the historic core. Highways have driven every aspect of Houston's postwar development, from the physical layout of the city to the political process that has transformed both the transportation network and the balance of power between governing elites and ordinary citizens. Power Moves examines debates around the planning, construction, and use of highway and public transportation systems in Houston. Kyle Shelton shows how Houstonians helped shape the city's growth by attending city council meetings, writing letters to the highway commission, and protesting the destruction of homes to make way for freeways, which happened in both affluent and low-income neighborhoods. He demonstrates that these assertions of what he terms "infrastructural citizenship" opened up the transportation decision-making process to meaningful input from the public and gave many previously marginalized citizens a more powerful voice in civic affairs. Power Moves also reveals the long-lasting results of choosing highway and auto-based infrastructure over other transit options and the resulting challenges that Houstonians currently face as they grapple with how best to move forward from the consequences and opportunities created by past choices.

This monograph describes the development of Rhapsodie, a 33,000-word syntactic and prosodic treebank of spoken French created with the aim of modeling the interface between prosody, syntax and discourse in spoken French. Theoretical foundations and methodological choices are presented and discussed, and compared with other contemporary approaches. Why is a data-driven instead of a corpus-based approach necessary when one wants to model and analyze discourse without neglecting the features typical of everyday speech, in order to capture not only what we say but also how we say it? How can one show that verbal exchange operates as a collaborative enterprise and how can the specific syntactic and prosodic markers of this collaboration be merged? The description proposed in this collective book is of interest for specialists of spoken French studies, and also for scholars who would like to extend Rhapsodie-like annotation schemes to other languages.

Nick Polo is back in his eleventh adventure, once again helped along by his sidekick, the indomitable octogenarian self-described witch, Mrs. Damonte… Billionaire vintner Paul Bernier sets San Francisco ex-cop, ex-con, private eye Nick Polo off on a hunt to find a kukri, a priceless golden jewel-encrusted 14th century dagger, designed by the Emperor of India. The dagger has a long, bloody history, passing between war lords throughout the ages, including Saddam Hussain. The search has Polo bumping heads with Bernier’s vindictive stepdaughter, his eccentric household staff, a Miami con man, a crooked private investigator, a drug dealing nightclub owner, a New York Mafia Don, and two viscous murderers. When all seems lost, Polo gets help from Mrs. Damonte, a self-described Strega, a witch, who believes that a day without a wake is like a day without sunshine. Praise for POLO’S LONG SHOT: “Nick Polo is the Saul Goodman of private investigators. He’s charming, persuasive, immune to adversity, and just dirty enough to get the job done. He never ceases to amaze and, just when you think he’s been bested, always produces an ace in the hole. Not since James Crumley’s C.W. Sughrue have I so avidly rooted for a fictional character.” —Jonathan Ashley, author of South of Cincinnati Praise for the Nick Polo mysteries: “A California PI himself, Kennealy captures some of the classic Hammett/Ross spirit in the Nick Polo series.” —Publishers Weekly “Briskly written, and because Kennealy himself was a working private eye, most persuasive.” —Philadelphia Inquirer “The Polo series all have a strong tradition of tight plotting, crisp dialogue, and self-deprecating humor.” —Booklist “Kennealy writes crisply, brings alive the streets of San Francisco, and plots clearly and interestingly.” —Washington Post “The writing is simple and direct, the action nonstop.” —The New York Times

Nazi Plunder written by Kenneth D. Alford and has been published by Da Capo Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-03 with History categories.

World War II was the most devastating conflict in human history, but the tragedy did not end on the battlefields. During the war, Germany -- and, later, the Allies -- plundered Europe's historic treasures. Between 1939 and 1945, German armed forces roamed from Dunkirk to Stalingrad, looting gold, silver, currency, paintings and other works of art, coins, religious artifacts, and millions of books and other documents. The value of these items, many of which were irreplaceable, is estimated in the billions of dollars. The artwork alone, looted under Hitler's direction, exceeded the combined collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the Louvre. As the war wound to its conclusion in 1945, occupying forces continued the looting. The story of these celebrated works of art and other vanished treasures -- and the mystery of where they went -- is a remarkable tale of greed, fraud, deceit, and treachery. Kenneth Alford's Nazi Plunder is the latest word on this fascinating subject.
