How can computers recognize faces? Why are caricatures of famous faces so easily recognized? Originally published in 1995, much of the previous research on face recognition had been phenomena driven. Recent empirical work together with the application of computational, mathematical and statistical techniques have provided new ways of conceptualizing the information available in faces. These advances have led researchers to suggest that many phenomena can be explained by the structure of the information available in the population(s) of faces. This broad approach has drawn together a number of apparently disparate phenomena with a common theoretical basis, including cross-race recognition; the distinctiveness of faces; the production and recognition of caricatures; and the determinants of facial attractiveness. This title provides a state of the art review of the field at the time in which the authors use a wide variety of approaches. According to a norm-based "face space" neural representation, faces are arranged by how far they deviate from a norm or average face, with faces of increasing distinctiveness represented by their distance from the norm. This is supported by evidence from adaptation, development, binocular rivalry, and neuroimaging. A series of experiments examines the norm-based structure of face space. First, adapting to young or old faces caused perceived age aftereffects. When middle age faces were adapted, no shift is shown. Both of these results are consistent with representation relative to a norm based on comparisons of pooled neuronal activity. Next, rivalrous neutral and distorted faces were presented binocularly, creating a constantly changing percept. Distorted faces were clearly dominant in initial experiments, but this discrepancy seems to be partially controlled by the distinct face having a greater pull in categorization. Increasing the types of response choices or limiting fusion decreased the bias, with evidence that observers were often seeing a partially distorted face. Finally, other experiments examined our ability to recognize angular and radial changes in a face space representation. Our ability to consciously access our own face space appears lacking, as well as our ability to equate perceived intensities between faces, especially with faces distant in face space. The evidence presented demonstrates that face space is consistent with a norm-based layout, and that this model might accurately be represented within a relative coordinate system similar to color and other models.

As our primary mode of contact with the world, perception is the informational and causal foundation of our cognitive processes; it is fundamental to our empirical thinking, believing, and action planning. Traditional accounts of the mind consider perception and cognition to be distinct, yet highly interrelated, systems. Much interdisciplinary empirical and theoretical work, from cognitive scientists and philosophers, has attempted to elucidate the complex relations holding among these systems, suggesting the existence not only of influences of perception on cognition but also vice versa. However, many questions are left unanswered. Given that perception is a guide to our thinking about and acting upon the world appropriately, the two systems must be able to 'talk' to one another; information carried by perception must be of a form adequate to be 'taken in' by our various cognitive systems.
