Neben den Kreditinstituten als direkte Auslöser sind vielfach die Abnehmer mittelständischer Unternehmen von der Finanzkrise betroffen. Als Konsequenz dieser Entwicklungen rücken alternative Finanzierungsformen wieder stärker in den Fokus von Unternehmen. Diese Arbeit wird in diesem Zusammenhang speziell auf das Finanzierungsinstrument Factoring eingehen. Dabei soll aufgezeigt werden, inwiefern Factoring als ein alternatives, ergänzendes Instrument zur Finanzierung für mittelständische Unternehmen angesehen werden kann. Dabei wird eine konkrete Darstellung der Wirkungsweise auf Liquidität und in diesem Zusammenhang auch Rentabilität vorgenommen. Aber auch die Anwendbarkeit und die weiteren Auswirkungen, die Factoring auf Unternehmen hat, werden erörtert, da es sich bei Factoring nicht nur um ein reines Kreditsubstitut handelt. Zunächst wird in dieser Ausarbeitung auf den Mittelstand in Deutschland eingegangen. Dabei steht zunächst die volkswirtschaftliche Position des Mittelstandes im Vordergrund. Es folgt eine Beschreibung der regulatorischen Veränderungen durch den Gesetzgeber, der Finanzierungsstruktur und der Auswirkungen der Finanzmarktkrise auf den Mittelstand. Im Hauptteil wird Factoring als Finanzierungsinstrument vorgestellt; dabei werden die Grundlagen, die Funktionsweise sowie die Ausgestaltungsformen von Factoring geklärt und anschließend die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten von Factoring bei mittelständischen Unternehmen diskutiert. Ergänzend folgt eine empirische Erhebung, eine Umfrage unter den Mitgliedern des größten deutschen Factoringverbandes. Am Ende des Kapitels werden die Forschungsergebnisse kritisch analysiert. Das fünfte und somit letzte Kapitel enthält ein zusammenfassendes Fazit, welches die Untersuchung abschließt.

Seit der Einfuhrung genauer Bonitatsbeurteilungsverfahren (Rating) in der zweiten Halfte der 1990er Jahre sind mittelstandische Unternehmen, deren Finanzierung klassischerweise fast ausschliesslich bankenorientiert war, besonders von der restriktiveren Kreditvergabepolitik der Banken betroffen.
